About Ian
I am a composer and pianist with a desire to teach and inspire anyone who wishes to learn piano, composition or music theory. I am also able to teach use of Sibelius and Pro tools up to a high standard.
My approach is based on encouragement and Co-operation. Although I intend lessons to be academically rigorous, I do not believe in a forceful approach to teaching as a relaxed setting is the key to fast learning. I will always take into account the point of view of my student and try to help them develop an individual personality and mindset. I realise that the key to sustaining a students interest is to show why their chosen instrument or subject is so fascinating. For example, I always find it beneficiary to regularly play exciting and interesting piano pieces to a student studying the piano as it will give them a glimpse of what is possible. I will often also introduce new music or encourage my students to seek out music that I think will inspire them. All that I ask of pupils is that they be willing to give things a go and to practice a certain amount of time every week. If this is done then improvement will be guaranteed.
Since graduating from Newcastle University in 2014, I have been teaching piano lessons both privately and in schools with students ranging from 5 up to adult age.

I have taught Ian music and Composition as a private tutor for nearly a decade, originally when he was preparing for a BTec and subsequently whilst studying at Newcastle and up to the present. Ian has matured into a very capable all round musician, with a real
talent for composition. Ian has written excellent scores for two outstanding musicals, both of them hits at The Edinburgh Festival. Ian has also become a capable and patient tutor, who has a good rapport with young people. He is also a talented footballer, and generally accomplished person.Ian has taught two of my children how to play the piano, he is punctual and reliable as well as patience with my younger child, he is always very good at teaching theory and makes it easier for anybody to understand. I would highly recommend Ian to anyone searching for a teacher as he is one of the best, I have had plenty of other piano teachers but Ian stands out the most amongst the other teachers.
