About Huw

Supportive, dedicated, and approachable online tutor

I am a supportive, dedicated, and approachable online tutor with an outstanding academic record and plenty of experience of how to succeed in exams. Having recently completed my masters degree at the University of Oxford, I am now working as a private tutor and English teacher in Berlin. I really enjoy helping motivated students achieve fantastic results, and think that lessons can be fun as well as useful!

I have plenty of experience of teaching and tutoring. I work on a number of different tutoring websites with students of a variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds. I`ve taught essay-writing skills to undergrad students at Oxford and helped prepare students for the daunting Oxbridge admissions process, from picking a college to interview prep. I also do a lot of work as an English teacher in Berlin. As a teacher, I believe preparation for exams is essential to success, but this preparation doesn`t have to be boring or mechanical. Developing the skills you will need for the exam is more useful than rote-learning facts, and is more useful in the long term too.

Academically, I specialise in eleventh- to thirteenth-century European ideas of barbarism and in the chivalric aspects of medieval Welsh literature. I am interested in various critical theories, including postmodern and postcolonial approaches and queer theory.

Beyond my academic interests, I enjoy reading, especially novels by Umberto Eco and Christopher Isherwood. I play the violin and enjoy going to concerts and operas from time to time. I can often be found trying out Berlin`s coffee shops with friends or trying to learn German as quickly as humanly possible.
