About Huw
Hello! My name is Huw, and all things literary and artistic are my passion. Sharing that passion with others is my pleasure. Novels, poems, essays, articles, speeches, treatises, songs, laws, adverts, letters of complaint - if you can write it, we can study it, even if we're both stuck at home.
I completed my Master's in English and Culture Studies at UCL in 2019, graduating with a high Distinction and making it onto the Dean's List of the best students in the Arts and Humanities Faculty. I also hold a Bachelor's degree in English from Bristol University, where I won a host of awards for my performance (including the Savage Prize for best final results). As well as tutoring and reviewing students from primary to Master's level, I've worked as Poetry and Prose Editor for an arts magazine, as an academic editor and researcher, and as a small-press publisher of silly poems and funny pictures. I want nothing more than to go into teaching and creative writing, with a strong focus on social and environmental justice, and I see tutoring as a responsibility and a delight. No age or level is off limits, and no goal too big or small!
My approach is, in short, calm. Being comfortable is key, and from a starting point of trust and informality I try to make thinking and writing fun, easy, and exploratory.
For younger students, I meet those crucial Key Stage 1-3 goals with pin-sharp attention to grammar, spelling, and tone, and fun lesson plans. For GCSE and A-Level students I firmly believe in cultivating open, intellectual discussion to develop quick thinking, public speaking and debate skills, and most importantly, our ability to listen to others and evaluate. At the same time, I love close analysis and am always ready to go down a rabbit-hole! For higher-level students, I'm a safe pair of hands and a well-trained eye, a confident interlocutor who can check your work and your thinking, or suggest new avenues of research with a professional knowledge of contemporary literature and philosophy (especially relating to ecology / animal studies, queer theory, literary theory, and writing about other art forms).
I'm also happy and qualified to tutor up to A-Level Geography and Art, and passed Grade 8 with an excellent Distinction on Classical Guitar. So whether you're looking for someone to guide you through the intricacies of volcano formation, advanced guitar techniques, or want to really get to grips with Andy Warhol, I can help there too.

Huw managed to bring this subject to life in my son’s eyes. My son was struggling to understand the subject and had a mountain to climb to get through the GCSE material. Huw was recommended by a friend whose daughter he also taught. I found Huw to be committed, attentive, flexible, effective and most of all he engaged with my son and got the best out if him. I have no doubt if he had Huw for longer he would have achieved a much higher grade.
Having witnessed Huw prepare for his tutoring sessions, I can attest to his commitment! He is the type of tutor who will go above + beyond to ensure that your time together is as informative as possible, but also enjoyable, exciting, and as relaxed, funny or intense as you might need. He adapts to the learning styles and personalities of his tutees very well, and to me, it's clear that his readiness to do so comes from a place of genuine care. When I have sought out Huw's help in the past, he has given me the most comprehensive + thoughtful feedback I have ever received – which I say as someone with both a Bachelor's and a Master's in English Lit. Huw always found the right words and his guidance regarding the structure of my work was critical to my success. He helped me make sense of what I was trying to say – and somehow even managed to boost my confidence!
Huw is generous with his time and supremely patient. He would be great for someone beginning to learn anything, hoping to gain confidence in a new skill (music) or for any one needing any kind of help at all with poetry, writing, reading comprehension, or essays. He was top of his class in his Master's programme at UCL (though he would never say it!) and is more than prepared to assist with advanced theoretical concepts. However, I've seen Huw prepare just as thoughtfully for total beginners in guitar and individuals that require special support with reading, math, and writing.
Huw is also extremely creative – with an impressive skillset in carving, drawing, song-writing, cross-stitching, printmaking, gardening, and of course, guitar. Regardless of what he teaches you, his creativity is an asset; if you are struggling to understand or remember something, Huw will surely find a way to help it stick!
You can be sure that Huw will truly care about you as a person and that he will reflect that fact in his warmth, his customized lesson plans, and his enthusiasm for your learning. Huw is both a teammate and a tutor when he works with you, because he is 100% on your side and ready to adapt to your particular needs, interests, + requests. He is incredibly informed on a range of topics and so dedicated to his tasks, but more importantly, I know that he would make your time together as meaningful as possible.Having witnessed Huw prepare for his tutoring sessions, I can attest to his commitment!
