About Hijaab

Academics:

I have recently graduated with an honours degree in BSc Economics from University College London. I achieved A*A*AB for my A levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics and Physics and have obtained 600 UCAS points. In addition, my GCSE results were all As and A*s.

Experience:

In addition to offering tuition to GCSE and A level students in Mathematics, Economics and Science for the last 10 years, I also worked as a tutor in Explore Learning and Kumon. I helped to create a friendly atmosphere for students to increase their enthusiasm towards education and thereby enhance their performance. This was an extremely valuable experience as I observed how my contributions lead to the development of their school lives. I also volunteered at the Oxford Central Library for the Summer Reading Challenge, where I encouraged reading by running interactive storytelling sessions. I met children with dyslexia and witnessing a rise in their confidence to read taught me valuable life lessons.

Introduction:

I am a certified Maths and Economics Tutor who graduated in Economics from University College London (UCL). With a background in finance, banking and stockbroking, I have chosen to leave a lucrative career in the City to pursue my passion in tutoring and have not looked back. I have obtained over 10 years of tutoring experience, equating to 5000+ total hours of tuition. I have helped many students (of all ages) prosper in terms of education and personal development, and I appreciate the immeasurable impact tutoring has on the performance and development of their school lives. Tutoring was initially just a rewarding experience for me; however, it has now evolved into a passion. My main subjects are Maths (up to A Level, incl Further Maths) and Economics (up to degree level); however, I also offer tuition in English, Science and Business Studies.

Methodology:

I offer introductory sessions to new students, where we have the opportunity to introduce ourselves and become familiar with one another. This allows my students to open up to me and share their strengths and weaknesses. Once I have observed their level and pace, I plan my lessons entirely based upon the individual’s personal progress. My methodology during the sessions consists of an interactive whiteboard, which I believe is very engaging for me and my students.

Find out more about Hijaab

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been a keen mathematician. I attended a tuition centre when I was very young and that sparked my interest in the subject. I was torn between Maths and Economics whilst applying to uni as I felt very passionate about both - in the end, I went with economics as I would still have the opportunity to study maths (if I did maths, of course, economics would not have been a module so worked out perfectly)!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I take pride in teaching these two subjects as I truly think they are the best subjects one can study (at the risk of sounding biased)! I love algebra and severely dislike econometrics :)
  • Did you have any role models; or a teacher that inspired you?

My role model is my mother - her perseverance and hard work are something I have always admired. I truly hope I
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think PATIENCE is key! It is very important to appreciate that each student is different and has their own pace. A tutor must also be adaptable to change their pace/lesson plans according to the student's needs.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I attended a tuition centre when I was very young and that sparked my interest in the subject. I watched how the maths tutors were so involved not only in our education but also in our personal development. They taught me valuable life lessons.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I started online tutoring waayyy before covid-19 since I was abroad. I found it very difficult at the very beginning. Now I would not like it any other way. I believe remote tutoring gives both students and teachers immense flexibility, allowing both parties to carry out lessons from the comfort of their own homes.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have many passions, including swimming (being a late swimmer allowed me to appreciate it much more) and playing chess (I won the best girl in Oxford trophy in my youth). Of course, my biggest passion is tutoring - something I have been doing for ten years.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My students often think of me as their friend as opposed to a tutor. They feel comfortable talking to me and asking for opinions about university selections, courses, which A-Levels to take, and just general life advice. What makes me a Superprof is a fact that this is not just 'tutoring' for me. It has now become a lifestyle.
