About Hester
Hello! My name is Hester, I am 24 years old and currently live in Coruña, Spain. I am a friendly, patient and enthusiastic person who would like to share with others the passion I have learning.
I suppose I could say I began tutoring whilst studying for my GCSE's, when I helped a family friend pass GCSE maths after 8 failed attempts, enabling her to enter onto her desired degree programme.
Two of my biggest loves in life are maths and sport. I (embarrassingly?!) competed in national sudoko championships and my idea of fun is a game of chess. I have a lot of experience in the world of sport as both an athlete and instructor, having competed to a high level in Heptathlon and later Triathlon and subsequently working as a swimming teacher, personal trainer and fitness class instructor. I feel extremely passionate to share my view of these two subjects in particular, that are frequently feared among students.
Whilst studying for my degree, I volunteered in a local secondary school to give focused small group maths classes to students who were struggling to reach their targets. It was very rewarding for both me and the students to see the progress being made as they understood new concepts and became more confident in their own ability.
After graduating from university with the unusual degree of 'Maths with Spanish' I decided to come to live in Spain as I love the language and culture. I have been working for the past 8 months in a variety of positions, from teaching extra curricular robotics at a primary school, to giving gym classes. As well as this, I have many one-to-one classes of English and maths.
Having learnt Spanish all the way from GCSE to university, I know the road that many students have to take. I feel looking back on my own learning, I can provide improvements and guidance to help others do so more effectively.
I am very dynamic and imaginative, having spent 3 summers working as an au pair for children under the age of 8. This has encouraged me to be creative and adaptive in order to make learning engaging and effective. This is reflected in my teaching style, changing my methods to best suit the individual as opposed to a one-size-fits-all approach.
I hope I can help to encourage and support current students in their learning.

Hester joined us at St James last year as a volunteer from Exeter University to help in the Maths Dept. Students were able to offer as little or as many hours as they could to gain experience as a Tutor/Teacher. Hester offered a huge amount (which was a credit to her as a busy Student herself). She was totally committed to improving the Maths grades of the Students as well as her own skills as a Tutor. From the first email that was sent between us, right through to the final session, Hester was friendly, warm, caring, enthusiastic and proactive with excellent communication skills with both the Staff and Students. A real accolade was that the tired and stressed Year 11 Students enjoyed working with her and turned up in their own time every session as they could see the benefits of her help. She had great empathy for the Pupils that she worked with and cleverly judged their ability and how to move forward quickly.
I cannot recommend Hester more highly. I wish that we could employ her full-time at St James!View more recommendations
