About Helen
I am a passionate, creative and supportive maths teacher with first-hand experience of working directly on maths qualifications. I will help you develop your maths, whether you are studying GCSE for the first time or resitting to improve your grade. Or perhaps you are working towards Functional Skills Mathematics for your college course or apprenticeship – or you need to pass an employer’s numerical aptitude test.
I am fully trained with over ten years’ experience teaching maths and numeracy from Entry Level 1 up to Level 2 / GCSE. I am currently teaching GCSE Maths and Functional Skills Maths in a large FE college. A flexible and empathetic tutor, my approach is to teach for understanding, always exploring the ‘why’ behind the methods and the links within maths. Together we will build your skills and understanding in a way that suits your learning approach to help you achieve and progress.
I have experience of teaching maths to meet the needs of older students and adults including people with dyslexia and related conditions, maths anxiety and other specific learning difficulties, as well as students who lack confidence with maths.
I have excellent knowledge of the GCSE (9-1) Mathematics qualification gained from seven years’ recent experience working in the maths team of one of the UK's major examining bodies. In this role I had particular responsibility for GCSE Maths post-16 through which I gained an appreciation of the issues faced by resit students in FE and of the requirements of the Foundation tier. This experience adds an extra dimension to the understanding I bring to my tutoring.
Online sessions will be conducted from my quiet, dedicated home office with up-to-date equipment and fast broadband. I use a pen tablet and virtual whiteboard which we can both write on, together with on-screen calculator emulator of the model most commonly used in schools. Notes from lessons and other work will be shared by whatever method is convenient for you.

Helen did one to one tutoring with me when I was studying for my Maths Level 1 and 2. I was really struggling with my Maths before Helen started working with me. But with her help I was really able to make progress, and this led to me passing both Level 1 and Level 2.
I would say the best things about Helen are her calm and professional approach. She was very patient with me and interested to find out the reasons I was struggling. So Helen first did an assessment to establish the areas that I needed to work on. She then created suitable worksheets and other materials which focussed on those areas and supported me in working on them. I found Helen was very good at encouraging me about my abilities and getting me to better understand the ideas behind the Maths I was doing.
Helen has very good communication skills. She is very knowledgeable but is able to explain information in a clear and practical way, making sure I understood what she said. Helen is also very approachable and a patient listener. She was sensitive and understanding about my needs, but also effective in putting across what I needed to know and do.
I will always be very grateful for Helen’s help in achieving my Maths Level 1 and Level 2. She also helped me enjoy the learning experience which I had not done before with Maths. I would highly recommend Helen as a tutor.Helen is an imaginative and effective teacher. She shows an empathetic understanding of adult learners, as examples their possible maths phobia or difficult personal circumstances that might affect learning, and adjusts her teaching appropriately, for example employing mini projects, collaborative learning, activities and games. She uses gentle humour appropriately and develops relationships with learners based on trust and understanding.
Having both taught and been involved in the development of Functional Skills materials, Helen has a good understanding of the aims and objectives behind these curricula. Helen takes an active approach to her continuing professional development attending conferences and meetings that will further her knowledge and experience in the field.View more recommendations
