About Helen
I came into teaching relatively late having pursued my own career as a practicing artist. My primary focus was on Fine Art Textiles and Design. I ran my own business working on commissions for both illustration and textile design. I have been employed at both Camberwell and Chelsea Schools of Art as a technician and part-time lecturer. I really enjoyed working in education and being part of the teaching team. This informed my decision to pursue a career in secondary education. I
I did my PGSE at Goldsmiths University. My teaching practice, in South London, gave me a valuable insight into working with a rich and diverse range of young people. This experience has enabled me to understand the need to reach out and facilitate learning through showing flexibility, empathy, having enthusiasm for my subject, and most importantly, creating a positive learning environment, that plus a sense of humour!
As Head of Art & Design at Radnor House Sevenoaks (formally Combe Bank School) I have taught years 5-13. KS2,3 & GCSE. I introduced both A Level Photography and Textiles in addition to the Fine Art course. I have been fortunate in being able to teach the younger year groups. Running both art clubs at lunchtimes and dedicated art lessons to year 5 & 6. Topics have been either linked to the curriculum in other subjects or have been DT initiatives. The ability to teach across the age ranges has been one of the aspects I have particularly enjoyed over the years.
I have recently relocated to Sandgate and in continuing my career in teaching I have been doing supply and working in an SEN dept. I am now looking for specialist tutoring hence my application to join your agency.
I have a wealth of experience and have a passion for the creative process as I strongly believe that for all it is core to our wellbeing as a whole person, regardless of age and ability. If I am asked what sums up my teaching ethos it is as follows; Allowing all pupils regardless of ability, to experience and access a curriculum with endless possibilities and outcomes. I believe that the pupils are at the centre of learning, and that being supported by teachers, parents and carers is key to promoting a well-rounded individual ready to engage with the world around them, now and in the future.
I would describe the approach I take to teaching art firstly from the discipline of Fine Art. An emphasis on drawing and painting leading to the interpretation of ideas using a broad range of media 2 and 3D. Having a printmaking /textile background I encourage pupils to use mixed media. Where appropriate combine drawing techniques with stitch, fabric and collage. Pupils are encouraged to expand their skills, experience through practical work and where appropriate with cross curricular links. This and knowledge and understanding of artist and craftspeople here and worldwide across cultures and traditions.
My teaching ethos is very much informed by participation in the pupil’s personal journey and their experience. Working with both small and larger sized classes has enabled me to get to know the pupils’ strengths and weaknesses. My main objective is to engage with the individual and for them to realise their potential regardless of ability. Building self-esteem and confidence in their creative skills and assisting them to become independent learners is very important to me. I am very hands on teacher. I aim to create a visually exciting and stimulating learning environment with relevant resources and extensive subject knowledge.
During my time teaching I have been a tutor to several different year groups. The pastoral side of my role as a teacher has always been of an interest to me. With this in mind, I completed my Certificate in Counselling skills last year and have been a mentor to both new staff and pupils. I consider being part of the pupils’ educational journey as a privilege and one that I have really enjoy being a part of.
I very much hope you will consider my application and look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Regards Helen Lorigan
