About Hannah
I have recently graduated from King's College London with an MA in Classics having finished my BA at Durham University in June 2018. I have always loved Classics, studying Latin from the age of 13 and Ancient Greek from the age of 15. While studying Classics at university I discovered my love for Greek drama writing my undergraduate dissertation on masculinity in Greek tragedy and my Master's dissertation on the links between femininity and madness across three famous plays. Studying ancient texts in the their original language has awarded me with great attention to detail which is a useful skill in a tutor.

My first introduction to tutoring was in my upper sixth, when I volunteered at a local primary school to teach Latin to Year 6. There were 5 volunteers and so we split the class into groups and started taking them through a beginner’s textbook. I used this time to start developing my skills as tutor, learning how to keep children engaged with interactive activities and by getting them to read short funny stories. I monitored their progress by giving them mini-tests each week and rewarding their hard work.
Throughout my time at university and over the last year I have used tutoring to support myself. I taught a whole range of subjects from GCSE Latin to A Level Classical Civilisation. When taking on a new tutee, I use the first session to get to know them and work out the areas they are struggling with so that I know what to concentrate on over the following weeks. I would then create a lesson plan, setting achievable goals to be covered in sessions and in the students own time. I also make sure to learn the parts of the subject they enjoy and make sure to incorporate these aspects into my lesson as well. I use regular tests to monitor a student’s progress and encourage them to ask questions when they are confused. I find the three best qualities for a tutor are patience, confidence and a sense of humour. These characteristics help your student relax and feel comfortable to ask questions and make mistakes.
Since lock-down, I have used the extra time to create my own resources, such as powerpoints explaining and demonstrating basic grammar points. I have received lots of positive reivews both from my clients and other tutors I have shared them with. I am pleased to have had to the time to create these powerpoints and am determined to use them with other tutees as they are a clear, concise and helpful teaching tool.
