Since 2009 I have been a freelance Mandarin teacher. That year, my University classmate asked me to teach him Mandarin. Following this I worked in Grange Primary School (Ealing) as a teaching assistant where the younger pupils also wanted to study Mandarin. The increased interest in learning Mandarin and the potential I have seen in students has given me the drive to set up my own Mandarin training centre. Teaching is a rewarding job that I wish to continue. When my students communicate and speak with me and others in Mandarin I feel so proud of their achievement. Therefore, I am now eager to gain more Mandarin teaching experience in schools.
At the moment, I work in Primary and Secondary schools. My students age range from Year 1 to Six Form. I use a variety of teaching materials, tools and methods to ensure all my students fully comprehend. For lower level students, I use Power Point, pictures, cards, videos and objects which creates a practical learning environment from which I can elicit the answer from them. For higher level students, I use previously learnt words and sentences to explain new material enabling them to easily understand. I believe that a good Mandarin teacher should teach in Mandarin, and only use English when needed, creating the best learning environment.
Finally, I have experienced both Chinese and British educational approaches, and so have been taught different teaching methods and skills. I have obtained an IMCPI certification (awarded by Edexcel) which covered Mandarin teaching methods and the research and development of teaching materials. By combining the skills I have gained, and widening my knowledge of teaching I plan to refine my own, unique teaching style.
