About Giulia

I am a Doctor of Classics at Royal Holloway, University of London. I have extensive experience of lecturing and seminar teaching at RHUL (including beginners' Latin and designing modules on Greek History and the City State and Roman Literature of the Empire), with excellent student satisfaction feedback.

I have also tutored students in Ancient History, Italian, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

I am highly proficient in both Latin and Greek, as I have studied both languages since I was fourteen. I read Classics at the University of Pisa and have passed examinations on Greek Language and Literature, Latin Language and Literature, Greek Grammar, and Classical Civilisation.

In my teaching practice:

* I encourage students not to take their primary texts at face value, but instead to interrogate them as both products and producers of their cultural and historical contexts. Reading closely and drawing connections both within and beyond a single text are, I believe, fundamental steps in the interpretation of our sources and important tools that students should adopt when approaching literary texts.

* I offer tailored lessons and extra resources, depending on a student's need and objectives.

* I use online platforms to interact with my students in a secure and efficient way, and share my screen with them to direct them to extra resources or illustrate a specific point in writing.

* I aim to create a safe and friendly space, in which students can recognise and develop their skills, and also feel free to ask questions about anything that they might find unclear.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I was lucky enough to be able to start studying Classics when I was fourteen. I was immediately fascinated with (and a little intimated from) ancient Greek, a language that looked so 'different' and yet so familiar. It was natural for me to move on to study Classics at university all the way up to a PhD. I have always been tutoring students in Ancient Greek and Latin whilst pursuing my studies, as I have always found helping students very fulfilling. Once I started my PhD, I also had the chance to tutor university students in Ancient History and Latin Literature - a challenging but wonderful experience.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I currently organise and lead Greek History seminars at university. Teaching Greek History is very rewarding: I try to challenge students' existing assumptions on questions of ancient status, class, gender, and to teach them how to nuance our approach to ancient sources by assigning them a range of materials to read and reflect on. Leading Latin literature seminars further gives me the opportunity to guide students into getting to know and appreciating fundamental Latin poetry and prose texts. When tutoring ancient Greek and Latin, I enjoy helping students with both grammar and Classical culture. What I love the most is to connect linguistic and grammar points to wider, cultural and historical, questions.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Ancient Greek teacher in high school was an inspiration for me. I still remember the way she started her very first class by asking us if we knew what "anemology" was. Of course, nobody knew. She then told us that "anemos" is a Greek word that means "wind", and "logos" is another Greek word, meaning "study". "Anemology", she said, "is the study of winds. I am no anemologist, but I know ancient Greek". She was a strict teacher, but studying with her really paid off, and left me with a great passion for the subject.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I personally think that a good tutor should be patient and passionate, able to share their enthusiast for the subject they tutor, but also honest about what they know and what they don't. It's really important to show students, I think, that learning takes time, commitment, and work.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Not quite an anecdote, but one of the best moments in my teaching career so far has been receiving an email from one of my students telling me that my classes were the highlight of their week.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

In the past, the main challenge was, of course, learning all about Greek and Latin grammar (there are many rules…). Now, I try to go beyond grammar itself, and question the rhetoric my texts. So I guess the difficulty for me is try to strike a balance between trust and distrust in our ancient sources, which, in many cases, are all we that have for reconstructing cultural and historical contexts.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I will admit that I am pretty passionate about Classics (you have to be if you go for a PhD in it!). Other than my studies, I enjoy crime fiction books, tv series, and detective stories (Agatha Christie is one of my favourite writers), and I never say no to a cheesy romcom!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I would say the range and quality of my teaching experience and educational background. I have experience of both the Italian and British academic systems, and I can offer tutoring in both Italian and English. I am also really committed to what I do, and always do my very best to help my students.
