I am a mature, professional tutor who will quickly understand your weaknesses and your preferred learning style to make the most of your lessons. My lessons are always individualised and well prepared in advance, with plenty of interaction and fun.

I specialise in economics, finance (including real-estate/property) and accounting, as well as writing training. Please note that I do not teach it econometrics/quantitative methods nor maths.
I have been a full time tutor for over 10 years building on my long professional teaching and training experience.
Given my wide-ranging experience, I can provide additional study material for university students who struggle with their own, create visually engaging spreadsheets for those who find finance abstruse, stimulate the intellectual curiosity of my A-level students, create bespoke courses for professionals looking to gain a better understanding of the economics, finance and accounting required in their jobs and act as a knowledgeable and patient tutor for students struggling with their dissertations.

I have a first class degree and a PhD in economics. I am also a qualified accountant and a Supervisory Analyst (New York Stock Exchange series 16 qualification).

I only teach online. I also do a lot of work through email, when commenting on essays and dissertations.

My availability varies widely, so please enquire but in general includes early morning, early evening and weekends as well as school holidays

I teach from A-level upwards. I have experience in teaching all ages and often teach adults.

Find out more about Giovanna

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I started studying accounting at 14 and economics at 16 and I am now 60, so that was a long time ago!!
I started tutoring 12 years ago but I had my first teaching job when I was 18, as a stand-in music teacher, one of the many jobs I did to pay for my university studies. During my 10 years at Morgan Stanley, one of my core duties was training juniors and it was this that made me think of going into tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in economics, finance and accounting, and anything related to these subjects fascinates me, but I do not teach econometrics.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had a few great teachers and many really bad ones, which in a way make you learn more of what to avoid. What I am inspired more these days is educational research, as I think that all students benefit from understanding metacognition and the tried and tested ways to learn effectively.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

First and foremost, subject knowledge as the depth of knowledge makes a huge difference - I am astonished by how many first year undergraduates pretend to be able to teach A-level economics. Some university students can make good study buddies but professional tutors are really on a different league.
Second, flexibility, the ability to tailor learning to the student, from using their interests in real-life examples of the concepts studied to unearthing deep anxieties and supporting in their career choice.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At my first lesson with an MBA student I was trying to assess their finance knowledge so I asked "tell me in your own words what is the time value of money" and they replied "It is what I am paid when I work". I knew then that there was a lot of ground to cover before the exam!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Academic research is constantly expanding and professional practice is forever evolving - I have to read and study constantly for my knowledge to stay current - I do envy Maths tutors who never have to study anything new, but it does keep my job interesting.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am particularly keen on helping my students with their university choice, job search and continue mentoring in their professional careers, and I have developed many fulfilling long-term relationships like this.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I have a unique mix of professional and academic experience, combined with a real passion for teaching.
