About Gillian
- What kind of experience do you have?
I taught in the private and state sector between 1983 and 2006 although I qualified as a teacher some years earlier. In 2000 in addition to my fulltime job as a teacher I began to tutor privately. This was so successful that in 2006 I began to work fulltime as a private tutor (over twenty students weekly) and have continued to the present day although for the last two years I have tutored exclusively online using Skype.
Since 1983 I have taught Business Studies in one form or another, especially to students who wish to pass or improve their grades in AQA, Edexcel and BTEC exams. I believe that my own experience in running businesses helps me to bring the subject alive for my students.
I am also an enthusiastic teacher of English Literature in preparation for GCSE examinations.
I have also been very successful in tutoring for Common Entrance, assisting students to secure the school of their choice.

I welcome enquiries from students of all ages but only teach online. I prepare students for AQA, BTec and Edexcel Business Studies exams informed by my own " hands on" experience of setting up and running my own successful businesses.

- How much do you charge?
All lessons for key stages up to and including GCSE are £35.00 per hour, £40.00 per hour for A level students and others.
- Where do you teach?
Online only via Skype
- When are you available?
All mutually convenient times and during the daytime.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have found that I can successfully teach students aged 10 years and above via Skype. I have also taught a student described as "Special Needs" via Skype and he is now attending university.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
AQA (English and Business Studies) BTEC and Edexcel (Business Studies) and Common Entrance exams, also 11+ preparation (the latter also includes non-verbal reasoning tests)
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor online via Skype, sometimes with the aid of a whiteboard. I use two PCs so that I can talk to my student via Skype on one PC and receive or send (if needs be) any additional information that might be required during the lesson through the second PC. I have a wide selection of teaching materials and, if necessary, I email resources to be used in the lesson beforehand so that students have time to print them out and have them available for the session. In addition, I can receive materials prior to a lesson if the student has something they particularly wish to work on during the lesson.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
If you want to learn business studies in a straightforward easy-to-understand language with no confusing technical explanations and without mind-numbing jargon then I'm the tutor for you. I have been in business since the year I qualified as a teacher and have at times run both jobs alongside bringing up my family. In truth I have had two non-starters (so I understand what factors can lead to failure) but otherwise my businesses have been successful and have paid the bills and helped me to put by enough for a comfortable retirement – whenever that comes! I am presently involved in two new small businesses so I am competing in the current business environment and all that it entails. If you really want to know about topics such as leverage and the marketing mix then I am the teacher for you. “Added value†to my teaching is the insight gained from my own personal experience and in the past it has helped my students improve their evaluations.
