About George
I am a UCL graduate in Arts & Sciences, majoring in Literature and Languages, with a wealth of tutoring experience. This includes tutoring English & French at a range of levels, as well as preparing students for different applications to a number of top London independent schools.
My work as a tutor has shown me the deep satisfaction inherent in directing and supervising my tutees' learning. Observing their progress, helping to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the subject, and building a rapport with the students has been an immensely enjoyable and rewarding experience, for both myself and the students.
I believe it is my passion that makes me a highly effective tutor. Indeed, my passion for literature has seen me working as a bookseller, and writing for the Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, and The Huffington Post. It can be reduced to a simple mantra: enthusiasm begets enthusiasm. My hope when tutoring is to channel said mantra, in emulating the impassioned teachers that taught me when I was student, who in turn have allowed for my deep-seated love of ideas, language, and reading.
As an experienced linguist, speaking not only French, but Spanish and Russian to proficient levels, as well as preliminary German and Italian, I hope to also instill and employ my passion for languages through dedicated and enthusiastic tutoring.
I look forward to helping students discover and reach their full potential!

Perfect! George has really helped my daughter appreciate Chaucer and given her an enthusiasm for a text she felt she didn't like at all. She has a much better understanding now as a result.

Outcome : She's a lot more confident about her forthcoming examView more reviews

Our son is currently finishing his GCSEs and we employed George Washbourn to tutor him in English Literature and Language. George has been employed by us for over 4 months now and we are very impressed with him both in his achievements with our son and his amicable relationship with us. George is well spoken and has motivated our son to achieve a much higher level of English than prior to George starting the tutoring with us. He has read every text in line with my son's current studies to ensure that he can provide the best teaching to our son. The confidence that our son now feels has far exceeded not only his expectations with his GCSEs but our own as well.
When I was studying for my gcse French exam, I found that I was struggling with it all; speaking, writing and translating. I turned to George, after a friend recommended him, who offered to give me some help. Over the course of the day, he helped me prep for my French speaking exam, going over my paragraph, which I had to memorise, and had helped me write it. After that, he then helped me with my writing and helped constructing sentences. I started the day with getting grades around D's and I finished the year with a C in gcse French. He helped so much and I couldn't have done it without George.
