My sessions are relaxed and focussed upon your needs so my approach will match your particular issues. I start from your current level and build incrementally. This involves identifying what I believe needs to be done, sharing this with you and then helping you to practise the skills critical to your future success. I don't have a 'stock' approach to my sessions, what I do will depend upon what you need, targetted at addressing your particular blocks, misunderstandings or gaps. Every student is different in my experience.

I have a wealth of resources and, as an examiner, I know exactly what a student needs to do to gain marks. I work at your pace but will encourage and motivate you to move beyond your current level.

I specialise in improving exam grades and have lots of experience and success at doing this. If you cannot analyse or evaluate effectively, I will show you how to and when to apply these skills to questions whether you are a GCE student or undergraduate.

In short, my approach aims to help you gain more marks for your hard work! I have marked thousands of exam scripts, this gives me a clear insight into what you need to do to get those better grades, experience that is, in my view, critical to your support and future success.

I train teachers' throughout the world (Africa, USA, Pakistan, China, Indonesia) for a leading UK university.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I was encouraged to develop my skills for my business role in procurement and then left to undertake a business degree before becoming a teacher (business/accounting). This led to my becoming a manager responsible for educational quality (and hence further study for an MBA). I was a personal tutor when I was a classroom teacher and so understood the importance of 1 to 1 support. I also had the opportunity in China, to experience the challenges students faced when dealing with exams in English. Again, individual support paved the way to ensuring these students were successful. I thus chose private tutoring when I returned to the UK. Becoming a private tutor was just an extension of my previous roles. After over 5 years I still enjoy this role: it’s still great when I see someone succeed!

  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I train business teachers across the globe: Africa, SE Asia, USA, and Indonesia so I have a good grasp of most business topics. I taught Accounting for many years, so this topic is straightforward for me. I cannot think of any topics within an A-level syllabus that I would highlight as something I don’t like. I particularly enjoy being involved with current business issues, developments, and theories that crop up during my work with undergraduates. It keeps me updated. I like to discuss current business developments (such as Twitter, Nov 22) with my A-level students and then apply theories and get students to highlight what is happening, why, and what the possible outcomes might be. It brings the subject alive, builds on what they may have already read about and encourages analysis and evaluation, the cornerstones of the exam process.

3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was inspired by a teacher that I later had the responsibility of managing! He taught me that active student involvement in the learning process was important. He encouraged argument, debate, and discussion, and I looked forward to being in his classroom, learning was enjoyable. Working with him as a fellow teacher and then manager, was testimony to his ability to teach. He helped me realise my ambition: an ambition born because of him. My academic go-to is currently, John Hattie and his ideas about ‘Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn'.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Good subject knowledge, patience, empathy, ability to give good constructive feedback, a good listener, being clear and unambiguous with your teaching, assessing your impact, treating students as individuals, and forming professional relationships based upon their needs. Also, having a clear understanding of the examination process (which I have) helps enormously.

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

What I learned from school, and my own story was that lack of scholarly success is not a mark of individual failure; a good teacher can and does make a huge difference; fear is not a good motivator and never underestimate your own ability.

  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Covid changed the way I worked and many people, including myself, had to adapt. Learning to train groups of students/business teachers online, was a challenge, new platforms, new delivery and learning to engage with a distant audience in creative ways continues to evolve. Using platforms like Miro constantly requires skill updating. The future of education is changing in terms of flexibility, technical know-how, and pedagogy: the whole process is still in its infancy. There are more challenges to come.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Ha-ha, I am first and foremost a teacher but … I am also a songwriter, musician and performer and have been for longer than I have taught. My real passion I guess is being creative. I apply this to all I do. I have used drama in accounting lessons, poetry in marketing lessons and written business case studies about the music industry taking my cues from what students wanted to research. It’s all business in the end!

  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My experience suggests that being able to motivate someone, perhaps through small successes initially and identifying and unblocking the obstacles that hold someone back, go a long way to building a student’s confidence and belief in who they are and what they can achieve. This, more than anything else is the catalyst for change in my view. What follows is keeping up the momentum for change, developing skills that support the change, practising and providing feedback that clearly highlights what needs to be addressed – a clear roadmap that sets out the route ahead and the development needed to reach the end goal – the exam, assignment, or dissertation. In short, turning a student’s, ‘I can’t do’ into ‘let me have a go,’ and then, ‘I think I’m getting the hang of this!’ This is what I do and my approach to being a Superprof.
