About Gaia
About me:
I am a third-year Chemical Engineering student at Cambridge and IB graduate (45 points overall) with experience tutoring Maths and Chemistry for the IB Middle Years Programme, IB Diploma Programme and GCSEs.
In addition to tutoring, I also have experience teaching in classroom settings, having worked as a temporary Primary Science, IB Computer Science and GCSE Maths and English teacher over the summer. I also have volunteering experience demonstrating and explaining a range of Chemistry and Physics experiments to primary school students in schools and at public events.
I am available from the 11th of May to the end of September, and am eager to help consolidate knowledge acquired during the school year, as well as prepare students for the year ahead.
Mathematics:
Through my experience tutoring and as a student myself, I found that schools often rush through the curriculum. Consequently, the focus tends to be on algorithmic approaches to mathematics, rather than comprehension, which is discouraging and off-putting for many students. Students are taught WHAT they need to do without knowing WHY, which makes it difficult to apply what they learn to unusual problems under test conditions.
My aim is to help develop comprehension and confidence by explaining the WHY behind the "rules" students are taught in school. A deeper understanding not only makes remembering the "rules" easier, but also makes learning more interesting and engaging. This will help students become more fluent in mathematics, allowing them to apply what they learn confidently, and with fewer mistakes in new situations.
Chemistry and Physics:
Having studied Chemistry and Physics at Higher Level as part of my IB qualification (achieved a 7 in both) and at University level, I am knowledgable in these areas and eager to share my passion and interest.
While mathematics is greatly skill based, Chemistry and Physics are more content-heavy which can be daunting for some students. The aim of science is to explain why things are the way they are, but often schools encourage students to turn science into a memory game.
Therefore my approach is to focus on consolidating the understanding of basic concepts and principles and how these can be applied to understand more complex phenomena.
That being said, I am very flexible and will adapt to each student's individual needs and attitude towards learning.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Gaia is very dedicated and hard working, made her own study resources which were very helpful in preparation for my IB Chemistry exam
Gaia deserves this rating because she is very clear when tutoring, and she makes her explanations easy to understand. Since being with Gaia I have noticed improvement in both my own knowledge and performance.
