About Frances
I have a first class honours degree in Chemistry and a masters in Chemical Biology (Distinction). I am currently a PhD Candidate studying chemical approaches to improving plant’s photosynthetic efficiency and I have plenty of previous experience working with students in a school and one-on-one.
I am passionate and love inspiring students. As a student, I understand how to retain knowledge, condense information effectively and how to reach academic goals efficiently. I will tailor the sessions to maximise the pupils understanding or help the student revise topics.
When I was a child, I struggled with dyslexia and so I understand the importance of explaining information in different ways and using visual aids.
I have previously taught a maths group ageing from 7-8 years old within a school and tutored GCSE sciences. I look forward to working with you and helping you meet your goals.

Frances Collins is in the third year of a (one year Masters of Research (MRes) + 3 year PhD) run by the Institute of Chemical Biology, (Department of Chemistry) at Imperial College London. As director of the MRes course, Deputy Director of the PhD programme, and also in my capacity as Frances’ research supervisor, I have known her since October 2017.
Imperial College London is one of the world’s top 10 universities, and therefore is highly competitive, with all MRes and PhD students required to have a BSc or MSc 2:1 (Hons) or above. Frances’ 1st Class degree from Manchester and her experience both as a lab technician at Afton Chemicals, as well as in Dr Rauchfuss’ organometallic lab at the University of Illanois made her a strong candidate for the programme. The MRes course in Plant Chemical Biology aims to foster students’ development in multidisciplinary research at the interface between the plant and physical sciences. This is achieved via examined taught elements (which include lectures on “Tools and Technologies” and “Core Biology”, group workshops, journal clubs etc.) and an 8-month research project. I can confirm that Frances was awarded a Distinction for this course.
Frances is now focusing on her PhD research project, which is entitled, “Investigation into Rubisco Activity in the Presence of Carbonic Anhydrase Mimics”, and is being supervised by myself, and Dr Rudiger Woscholski. Frances has shown to be an exceptionally hard working and a highly motivated student. She is conscientious, and pays close attention to detail. Her ability in the lab to date has been outstanding. She is a brilliant communicator, both with written and oral presentations. She has helped supervise and teach a number of graduate and Masters students in my lab, always in a supportive, inspiring and caring manner.
She is able to quickly grasp new techniques, and when confronted with a problem, can think creatively and commit the hours needed to solve it. Frances is a bright, enthusiastic, highly personable and polite student, and is an absolute pleasure to work with. I therefore have no hesitation to recommend her as a tutor and am certain that her students will find that she is able to bring subjects to life, in a fun and inspiring manner.
With best wishes,
LauraI have know Frances since she was 7 years old and is a close family friend. She is a very conscientious person who takes great care and diligence in her work. She is smart, reliable and extremely loyal. She is committed to what she does and always gives 100%. She has been very successful in her studies throughout her education and her achievements have been plentiful. Frances is a friendly, kind character who would relate well to students. I would thoroughly recommend Frances as a Tutor.
