Passionate about helping students achieve in English

I love words. I love language. I am passionate about helping students improve their ability to use and understand language and to express their ideas clearly. I have five years experience teaching and tutoring GCSE and A-Level English and ESL. I am known for my dedication and energy. Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss tuition.

I studied English language and literature with Spanish and Portuguese at Nottingham University. I then went on to become an English language teacher specialising in Academic English, teaching essay writing and presentation skills, critical thinking and comprehension. I’ve also been tutoring for several years, teaching General English and IELTS to non-native speakers and tutoring English from 11+ to GCSE.

I believe confidence is a major barrier to success at school and this is a key focus in my lessons. I’m a creative teacher and enjoy finding different ways to break down a text or approach a language focus in order to relate it to my students. I also believe it’s important that students understand why they are doing things in their lessons, explaining both how the exercise will help answer the question and how the skills they are learning can be used in their wider academic and professional lives. I have been praised for my holistic approach to teaching and my ability to get students enthusiastic about the subject.

These days I juggle tutoring with singing in a band and working with an education charity which aims to bridge the gap between school and work. I love meeting young people, finding out what they like and what they’re good at and creating strategies to help them achieve academic success.

My thoughts about Fiona

Fiona was my teacher during my first year of learning English. With someone who was really bad in English, she was a great and supportive teacher. She helped me so much and her support pushed me to go further and overcome all the barriers. Now, I am in my last year of my undergraduate studies.

English is now my daughter's favourite subject

My daughter was going into her last year of GCSE study when she started with Fiona. She had spent the two years prior to that saying that she hated English and didn't understand the point. In general, she was achieving good grades, but her English scores have always been the biggest struggle. When she was predicted a C and a D we decided to get a tutor.
Fast forward a year, and we have an A* in English Language, and an A in English literature. The greatest shock of all is that Lizzie changed her A-Level choices so that she could study English! We consider that a huge accolade to Fiona's ability to inspire, and to instil focus in her student. Lizzie always looked forward to their time together.
We have used several other tutors along the way for Lizzie's siblings, but Fiona is in a league of her own. Now we are just trying to twist her arm into learning the A-Level syllabus so we can keep hold of her!

Fiona has made a huge contribution to my daughter's life

My daughter's grades had been middling to good throughout school, but in the year proceeding her 11+ entrance exams things had started to slip across the board. Particularly, in her English. We couldn't get her tutored in everything, but we decided to hire Fiona to sort out the English, as that was going to be the toughest challenge.
Fiona had come very highly recommended from a friend of mine. Even so, she managed to out perform all of our expectations. Not only did my daughter's English results improve significantly, but she adopted an entirely new maturity in her approach to all her work. This did not go unnoticed by her teachers, who told me whatever was going on at home, to keep it up! Her grades jumped up a notch in almost all of her subjects, and she began telling me how much she was enjoying school.
St Paul's Girl's is a very tough school to get into, and we are convinced that our success would not have been possible without Fiona. We are eternally grateful for the contribution she has made to our daughter's life.

Fiona Hamilton reference

Fiona took on the responsibility for the long term tutoring of students at Paddington Academy. She took it upon herself to become well-acquainted with the examination requirements, and was able to coach students in exam skills as well as subject knowledge. She quickly got to know the students, and built very positive relationships with them. Fiona was always well-prepared for the sessions, and immediately started differentiating for the different students in her sessions, so that they had personalized learning experiences.

Highly recommended

Fiona taught my daughter English Literature at both AS and A2 level. Fiona put a lot of effort into providing resources that would help reading further around the subject. Always well prepared with a kind and patient approach, Fiona brought practice questions to the sessions and enabled increased confidence in the subject. She provided clear feedback on where to improve and marked any work my daughter asked her to. Overall Fiona developed a good working relationship with my daughter - I highly recommend her!
