About Fiona
I am in my 5th year of medical school at UCL, which I joined after completing my undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and deciding I wanted a more people-oriented career. In medicine, there is a continual emphasis on effective communication and teaching, both in hospital and out in the community. Whether this be in the form of student-led teaching sessions at medical school, or delivering lessons on specialist topics at local schools, I enjoy the vast range of teaching opportunities available to me, and by way of this, have enriched my skills in these areas.
My experiences range from small group teaching to large scale classroom-based work. I was involved in UCL Sexpression for a year, where I was invited to secondary schools across London to teach sex education to classes of 13-16 year olds. It was through this that I developed skills in lesson planning, attained considerable proficiency in constructing learning activities, and gained a Training to Teach certificate. I have since done similar work with UCL Education for Choice.
In small group teaching, which occurs frequently as part of medical training, I tutor topics in the fields of medicine, physiology and pharmacology to students (groups of 2-10, often with one-to-one sessions). These lessons gave me experience in not only relaying more challenging concepts, but explaining them based on the needs of the individual student. This then allowed me to create exercises that are more geared towards the individual's learning style and approach.
For tutoring, my teaching style would depend on what is most suitable for the student in question, but I always aim to create a supportive, non-judgemental learning environment. This would be supplemented by teaching materials that are related to the student's curriculum, and guided by the student's goals that I am able to help set. As someone who remembers the efforts of getting the right GCSEs/A Levels, I would be more than happy to aid someone else along the process!
I would also be open to helping out with university applications, particularly to degrees in science and medicine; this would be in the realms of giving tailored advice on personal statements, work experiences and general guidance based on the insights I have attained as having gone through both streams.
