About Filiz

A qualified and enthusiastic teacher, with over ‘5 years’ worth of experience, currently searching for an English Language Teaching position to utilise my skills and take the next step in my career. I am interpersonal and I love to be a part of a team and work with them together.
After experiencing the BA: English Language Teaching from METU / Turkey and Language, Culture and Linguistic and TEFL BA from SUNY New Paltz / USA. I have always held aspirations to become a teacher, not only in the primary sector, but also High School teaching, too. Since 2012, I have been teaching in several grades, such as, primary school, secondary school and high school. I have found myself inspired by the challenge of encouraging all of my students to realise their potential and this has further cemented my decision to become a teacher.
February 2010, I did my fieldwork in Poughkeepsie High School and Morse Young Child Magnet Elementary School in NY / USA. April 2012, I did my second fieldwork in Yasemin Karakaya Secondary School in Ankara / Turkey. Having the right to do my fieldwork not only in Turkey but also in the USA gave me a different perspective for my teaching. I had both experience from schools in Turkey and the USA. It was very helpful to see this in a different country because I would be teaching in Turkey.
I have a particular interest in drama. During High School I was a in the Drama Club. After that I continued my work and took different educations in different schools to use it in my classes, too. I think that these skills are very important, because I have already found that drama can be an useful educational tool, especially in the early stages of learning. I am using it in my classes and it helps to grab my students attention easily.
I hold a rooted enthusiasm for English Language; its history, its functions within society and its cultural influences. I picked out distinctive characteristics within the fundamental frameworks of English language (semantics, pragmatics etc.) having lectures about them in my education in METU and also I think to make my masters degree in English Language or English Literature. In addition, I enjoy analyzing novels thematically.
I greatly enjoy my studies of English Language Teaching. I have a love of children, and there are many reasons why a career in this field appeals to me. I enjoy interaction with children on their own level, no matter what age they are, gaining insight into their perceptions and how they see the world. The idea of playing an active role in helping them develop while they are also learning, greatly attracts me. I try to teach not only the language but also I want them to understand the culture of the language. I gain huge satisfaction from being able to help them, learn and discover new things about the World and the language. I also believe that it is a great challenge trying to put across a new concept so that a group of children, who previously did not understand it before, understand it now. Using different methods inside the classroom is a great experience for me, too. I want to enable children to have fun at school and make the most of their primary school or high school days, and not to find school boring or a waste of time and also it is really important that they learn the knowledge they can use in their future or education life.
I also like having personal responsibility over a group of students, seeing them through a year or until their graduation, and witnessing them improving within the lesson or in their social lives as a classroom teacher.
I have had many varied experiences related to teaching, which have strengthened my desire to follow this career. I currently have a full-time job at "Gebze Bilfen Schools", which I have held since September 2015. My job allows me to interact with many different children, across a range of different backgrounds.
My work at "Gebze Bilfen Schools" has taught me many things, most notably patience and the ability to keep calm while working with young learners. In this school I work with primary school students. I got my class in the first grade now we are still together and they are in the second grade. In this school the students do not know that we are talking Turkish so I am speaking in English with them all day. I am preparing my students for the TOEFL exams. Also, their English speaking level is advanced now and they can talk English like a native. I am running the English Science Club, in which we are making experiments together with the students. We had the ‘’rock n roll day’’, ‘’respect animals’’ projects which I was dealing with. We have the public speaking hours in which our students can talk about what they think is important in the world. At school I have responsibility for taking care of them. We use the UK Curriculum in our school, so I am aware of how the curriculum in UK is. I feel that my experience and enthusiasm for Primary teaching would make this a fulfilling and rewarding in my career. In this school I also got an education of ‘’multiple intelligences’’.
I also have a deep interest in Psychology and Literature. I learnt the importance and value of objectivity as well as open mindedness. Sticking to the theme of psychology, I had the experience of learning the processes of NLP at school. Nonetheless, I retained an open mind throughout and found some aspects incredibly useful and I now apply some of what I learnt in my everyday life. I have a deep interest in Literature, too. I love to learn about different culture’s literatures. I like to read about them and learn about the culture’s history. I got interested in this in my education years thanks to my professors. I did many researches about them and wrote lots of essays.
Between 08/2014 – 06/2015 I was an English Language Teacher, Club Teacher and Classroom Teacher in Enka Technical High Schools (Kocaeli). I was a full time English teacher. I developed high quality of teaching with planning and assessment procedures. I attended 2 trips to other cities within Turkey and I was responsible of my own group of students. I like to go on trips with my students because it gives the teachers a chance to learn new things about the students and to share more with them, it makes us come closer. I prepared the students for the University Entrance Exams, all of them got into the Universities that they want with a nice grade in English. I made ‘’library hours’’ with my students so that they can also learn how helpful reading is and I wanted them to be close friends with books. I run the first aid club and was the classroom teacher (consultant) of the classroom, with each of my student we had also a speaking hour together, in which we spoke about what they want. (24pupil) I was also planing my own lessons and writing their plans according to the curriculum.
Between 01/2013 – 08/2014 I was an English Language Teacher, Club Teacher and Classroom Teacher in İnci Private School (Ankara). I was a full time English Teacher. I aslo gave German lessons for several months to my students. I run the Archery Club and we went to the championships in Turkey. I run the Chess Club and it was also in English. We had ‘’English Literature Day’’ and we made a show with my students. We also made a poetry & drama night with my students. I wanted to teach them different literatures as much as I can. We prepared a dance show about ‘’world dances’’. Beforehand we made presentations about dances all over the World inside the classroom and to the school. I had lessons with high school students and I prepared them for the University entrance exam. In my secondary classes we prepared for the Teog exam which is to get into the high school in Turkey. Twenty out of twenty students got full points.(whole class) I have a good knowledge and experience about these two exams. I run the ‘’chit chat club’’ in which we choose a Global issue and we were talking about it. This was also to practice their speaking skills.
Between 08/2012 – 01/2013 I was an English Language Teacher and Examiner in Parantez Language Course. In this course I got students from all ages. From the age 8 to the age 50. This was a grammar based language course. So most of the students came to learn grammar and improve their reading skills. In this course I prepared many exams which my employer used in his books also. It was a good experience for me in how to prepare questions or assess the students.
After I graduated I also translated a book from Turkish to English which was sold in Canada, UK and also online. In the university I got Turkish-English and English-Turkish translation lectures, so I wanted to prove myself in this field, too.
