About Felicity

Qualified Teacher (PGCE) with teaching experience in a number of high schools. I teach KS2, KS3 and GCSE Maths alongside the IT and creative subjects. Originally trained in Architecture at the University of Cambridge.

Studying Architecture enables me to offer a broader perspective when tutoring which students have found refreshing. I am also very interested in the overlaps between Architecture, Maths, Art and Music. I have undertaken 'Using Visualisation in Maths Learning' at Open University.

Thoughtful, intelligent and kind tutor I understand the patience and support needed by students. I have worked with a range of ages. I have found that with a lot of students they know more than they realise and just need a confidence boost.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always loved Maths and when studying it at school I liked the feeling of satisfaction you get when solving a complex problem. I particularly like Geometry and the study of shapes. Indeed my love of Maths (along with a passion for Art) led me to study Architecture at the University of Cambridge.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Maths can be a really daunting and challenging subject for students. I believe one reason for this is because it can seem so abstract and unlike any other subject studied at school. However, Maths can also be an immensely rewarding subject to study once you know what you are doing and feel confident in your knowledge.

I particularly like discussing problem solving topics with students as these can often require creative thinking and an ability to think outside the box.

Topics I like discussing less with students are (at GCSE level) iteration. I find that iteration can be confusing for students and a little mechanical in approach which can be frustrating for students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes! Mr Hill was my Maths teacher at high school and he was brilliant. He would always be very patient and clear in his explanations of anything I was stuck on. He is now a headteacher at a local school. When I got older my Art teacher Mr Davies was also another role model. He was very passionate about art and design and inspired me to study Architecture.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I feel above all a good tutor must be engaging and friendly. Helping students to feel really listened to and understood also helps. I think a tutor must also be reassuring and have an ability to build confidence in students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember learning about interior and exterior angles and finding the formula hard to remember. My Maths teacher showed me the method of breaking a polygon into triangles to help understand the total interior angles in a polygon. I found this really useful as it made everything make much more sense. I think that's the key to maths - helping it to make sense by using common sense explanations.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I used to struggle with advanced algebra as it sometimes felt quite abstract and disjointed from everyday life. But I overcame this challenge by making sure I felt very confident in the principles of algebra before learning about more advanced methods.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love Architecture, Design and Art. I really enjoy trying to combine this love when explaining Maths to students.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I have been tutoring for over 10 years and have always received 5 star reviews form students. I also have a PGCE and have taught in secondary schools. I'm really friendly and approachable and like to hear about students' passions. I have a lot of interests and right now am training to be an Architect. Sometimes these interests can help to make the Maths lessons more interesting for students.
