Faye is an exceptional young woman who has impressed all her teachers with her intellect, wit and dedication to her studies. She joined City and Islington Sixth Form College in September 2012 with an excellent set of GCSE results (7A* and 4 A grades) from an Inner London comprehensive school.
Attending the Sutton Trust Summer School, a taster course for an undergraduate course, through their widening participation programme, has confirmed her ambitions to study English at degree level.
Faye's English teachers describe her as an, 'outstanding literature student who has a real flair and interest in the subject.' She quickly gains a solid understanding of texts and is able to focus on subtle and sophisticated analyses of the work. She engages well with critical arguments and is able to employ the text to develop and consolidate her views. Her use of terminology is accurate and pertinent and she works well with group tasks, putting forward her
views clearly and succinctly. Her teachers have stated that she has the ability to express complex ideas in writing. Her history teacher cites an essay examining the impact of
Tsarist repression and reform in pre-revolutionary Russia: Faye effectively integrated a range of relevant interpretations into her argument. Her oral contributions are described as being consistently, 'measured and intelligent,' demonstrated during a discussion of the motives of European colonial powers during the scramble for Africa.
In her AS year Faye played the title role in the college production of 'Cinderella' and the Head of Drama was impressed with her excellent physical and vocal skills. Her coursework for drama showed an exceptional knowledge
of Naturalism and Epic theatre and was described as 'work of an outstanding quality'.
Deciding to take AS Music was a bold decision for Faye, as she did not have extensive theoretical experience. She made it her business to change that and in her quest for greater theoretical skills she quickly gained a distinction at Grade 5 theory and was fully prepared for her Unit 3 exam in listening, history, theory and harmony. In composition she responded to the brief with a song setting of a highly imaginative narrative and produced an excellent score. When performing, Faye is beautifully poised and has developed her voice through exploring varied repertoire
heard in concerts, in productions and at college-wide events.
Outside of college, Faye takes a keen interest in the theatre, and as well as playing the title role of Cinderella, she has been a volunteer with the Mousetrap Theatre where she works as a youth representative contributing to their rebranding and helping with the management of
events. She has also signed up for a literacy giant's book club.
All Faye's subject teachers have expressed the opinion that she is ideally suited to higher education as she has the
skills and approach to learning which will make her a very successful undergraduate. Away from her studies, Faye is courteous and supportive in her relations with other students. She has a likeable sense of her own worth and a real enjoyment of life.
