About Eve

(concealed information)

Summary:
My ethos is kind, flexible and consistent. I relate to my students, and see myself as a vital resource for them to reach their highest potential. I ensure that my students achieve high academic success using a combination of simple tactics; targeted, consistent, curriculum-certified practice with a supportive and experienced professional.

My Approach:
My tutoring method is strategic. It is based on my strong knowledge of the national curriculum. I use past paper exam questions for my 11+, GCSE, A-level, and degree-level students. I design bespoke lesson plans based on the student's individual needs, as well as a long-term schedule to ensure we cover all examinable content together. I change my tutoring methods based on the specific needs of the student, and I send parents a schedule and de-brief via email after class to ensure the student is on-track.

My Specialities: I tutor English as a Foreign Language (for all levels; beginner to advanced), KS2-4 Literacy, GCSE English Language and Literature, GCSE History, A-level English Literature, degree-level essay skills. I am also a very experienced 11+ tutor.

Why me?
My Experience:
I have worked as a virtual tutor for 3 years, with over 25 long-term clients ranging in age from 6-48. I work with students of all levels, learning, behavioural needs and backgrounds.
I have also earned a 166-hour TEFL qualification which included 9-hours of examined lesson plan work - I received a distinction in this course.
I have received many great reviews on my website (link provided - (concealed information) and on the this site platform for this work.

My Qualifications:
I achieved 5 A*s and 4As in my GCSEs (A*s being in English Literature, English Language, History, Philosophy and Ethics, ICT. As in Maths, Science, Spanish, Drama).
I also achieved AAAA* in my A-levels (English Literature, History, Photography and Extended Project).
I attained a first-class undergraduate degree in Law from University of Manchester.
I hold a 160-hour TEFL Qualification, qualifying me to teach English to foreigners from beginning to advanced level.
I also just attained my postgraduate (masters) degree in Public International Law at University of Manchester.

My Results:
My students experience palpable results from working closely with me. One student saw an increase in GCSE English Language and Literature from a 3 to 7. Another student went from a 6 to a 9 in Literature, and an 8 in Language. Another student whom I worked with on essay skills progressed from a 2:2 in her International Studies degree to a 2:1 in just 9 weeks.
One 11+ student began with attaining 40% on verified past papers, and is now attaining over 80% (a full pass mark) less than a year later.
Previous students in Adult Education noted that they experienced a marked increase in their confidence, knowledge and speaking ability through working with me. Further reviews indicating this are available on my website (the link is provided).

I'm a bespoke, highly educated English tutor with over 3 years of experience covering 11+ prep, KS1-3 English, primary-school reading, spelling and numeracy skills, GCSE (English and History), essay writing skills and learning English as a foreign language. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with over 30 students (aged between 6-49) and have experience working with students with additional needs including autism, ODD, ADHD and dyslexia.

About me
I have a unique educational background which led me to tutoring. I hold a first-class undergraduate degree from University of Manchester in Law, a postgraduate degree in International Law, four awards for academic excellence, and a certified qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I am planning to pursue a PhD in international human rights law in September 2024, and I am a committed researcher. As my background attests, I am very passionate about learning, and have sculpted a business around helping others develop this passion, too!

My Methods
This passion drives my approach to tutoring: rather than being a ‘headmistress’ style tutor, I consider myself an 'eternal student' - I started tutoring my siblings aged 15, and since then I've helped people of all ages understand difficult information and convey it meaningfully and effectively in their exams. Whilst I am firm with regards to deadlines and expectations around students work ethic, I create a relaxed environment in which students learn interactively. My students call me by my first name, and can ask questions as and when they arise, in the 1:1 format of a personalised lesson. When students do ask questions / need feedback, I give concrete examples of what otherwise vague advice means in practice - e.g., providing examples of what 'analyse' or 'expand' looks like, splitting it into ‘types’ and ask them to practice it at home, before reviewing it together again. As teachers often don't have time to go further than brief comments on students' papers - my hands-on approach translates feedback into an achievable formula and has made the difference between achieving a grade 6 and a grade 9 for many of my students.
For GCSE and 11+, I incorporate past paper questions into classes, and teach students a formula to follow in order to answer these questions to achieve their aspiring grade. I assign students homework to practice their formula, we mark it and discuss it in the next class, and we compare it to a full-mark sample answer to illustrate how to enact key analysis skills. They repeat the same question (in a new exam script) until they feel absolutely confident in it. The formula is particularly central to my work, as it allows me to break down questions into smaller sections to avoid overwhelming the student.
I offer a creative approach, and if a student does not understand a concept, we will do fun activities such as devising songs, poems, or rhymes to help them remember it. Due to my age (am 24), I can often relate to my students well, and will tie complex concepts about Shakespeare to modern-day popular culture to cement it into students’ long-term memory.
Though I am committed to consistent exam question practice and feedback each lesson, we (the student and I) always acknowledge and reward the positives in their work. The self-confidence of my students is a priority for me, so I often remind my students that GCSEs are important (but not everything), and if they trust their intelligence (and dedicate regular time to practising analysis skills) their grades will improve!

My Impact
My students experience tangible results from working closely with me. One student saw an increase in GCSE English Language and Literature from a 3 to 7. Another student went from 5s in English to a 9 in Literature, and an 8 in Language. 100% of my GCSE students have passed their exams, all achieving a minimum grade of 5, or are on track to do so in exams this Summer. Another student whom I worked with on degree-based essay skills progressed from a 2:2 in her International Studies degree to a 2:1 after just 9 weeks of classes. One 11+ student started with a score of 40% on verified past papers, and after 4 months of classes, was attaining over 85% (a full pass mark) and went on to pass her 11+ exam.
Previous students in Adult Education have also noted that they experienced a marked increase in their confidence, knowledge and speaking ability when working with me. I have also helped non-Native speakers perform successfully in job interviews and complete job applications.
However, as the reviews on my website indicate, its not just about numbers - several clients have testified that they feel more confident in their abilities, intelligence, and learning capabilities after my lessons. This is most important to me, as it helps them flourish in every aspect of their life, beyond the classroom.

Time slots
Intake for tuition with me opens in early September 2023. I work weeknights 4-8pm during term-time, and Sundays' mid-morning. Classes last 55 minutes (beginning on the hour) and I currently have four slots left for the year.
Over school holidays (half-term and Summer), I offer more lessons (often in AM) to solidify students' understanding whilst they have more time to practice. My students often do mock exams with me before their School 'mocks' to cement the formula and identify any shortcomings. I commit to working with a student for at least 9 months (until their exams / the end of the academic year) and beyond if needed. Some of my students choose to continue tutoring on to A-level, which I am more than happy to help them with - I have worked with one of my students' for 3+ years now, adjusting our work content to meet his changing goals as his education develops. Currently, places for my class slots are offered on a first-come-first-serve basis, so I would recommend reaching out to ensure you have access to a preferable time slot.

My prices
I use pricing bands to adjust the level of support as per the students’ needs. My pricing is calculated based on my four years of tutoring experience, my effective results (students' improve by an average of 2-3 grades working with me), and my higher education profile.

£40 per hour covers a bespoke lesson plan, with exam-based practice, assigned homework which is marked each lesson, a personalised class report accounting for students' mistakes (which is sent to parents' after each class), and a de-brief email to the parent to inform them of the students' progress. Also covers a class report (1 page in length) which catalogues students' working memory / analysis / spelling / reading / retention skills - this is for parents' to read, so you can chase up on their progress at home with specifics in mind!

£45 per hour covers all of the above, as well as a monthly 20-minute 'parents' evening' style meeting over zoom. In this meeting, I update parents on the students' progress, raise any concerns, and parents can ask any questions they may have. The close contact I offer to parents sets me apart from other tutors - at every step you know what your child is doing, and what they need to be doing to improve further.
With tutoring, you get what you pay for - whilst it is an investment, my students enjoy a 100% pass rate, and an average of 2 grades increase within 9 months. Many of my students' surpass this, with 4 of my 2022 year group scoring grades 8/9, having began at grades 5-6. I have also helped students' achieve admission to University of Oxford and private sixth form schools.
However, I also want to keep my classes accessible, so subsidies can be made if you are from a single-parent family or have additional needs (just get in touch to discuss this further).
