About Erica

Passionate Creative Writing & English Lit Tutor

I provide one-to-one tutoring in english, creative writing, and 11+Plus and SAT exam prep for pupils between 7-18 years old. I also offer lessons in english, creative writing, professional writing, and literacy for adults as well as editorial and copyediting services.

I was a tutor during my undergraduate education in the US and have tutored at the primary and secondary levels in London, UK, since 2013. As of Autumn 2017, I have completed my PhD programme in Children's and Young Adult Literature at the University of Roehampton, where I have taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Overall, I am passionate about teaching writing and critical thinking skills through writing and literature. I believe learning these skills can see individuals through much of their academic and professional challenges.

For new students, I am currently only able to travel within Zones 1-3 for lessons, unless other arrangements are made through the Tutorfair offices. For adult students, we can arrange a meeting place somewhere in central London for those living outside of that catchment area. Thank you!

thoughtful, generous, insightful

Written by Hazel Y
Erica tutored me though my first steps in poetry writing. She understood how challenging it can be for a mature student to be' seen' in print and taught me to appreciate my efforts whilst sharing her own writing with me. She was acknowledging and supportive through the process. I think she would be patient and encouraging with young children.
I wrote a poem for each of the sessions I had her tutoring support.

Unmatchable skills and commitment

Erica Gillingham is a natural teacher and communicator who has honed these inclinations with diligent exploration of effective tutoring practices. She is bright and cheerful, while making each tutoring session most time-efficient and rich with relevance.
Erica tutored a range of my writing students, helping them develop their reading comprehension skills while navigating the somewhat overwhelming terrain of University composition and rhetoric. She was quick to give extra attention to those who needed it and was able to tailor individual sessions with thought and care. When she was assigned to my courses, she changed the nature of them to the better.
Overall excellence as a tutor; improved competence and comprehension for the students who worked with her.

Amazing person and tutor

Erica is much more than just an amazing tutor, she is a great person that really looks at your needs to help you improve as a student. I specifically struggled with writing when I sought Erica's aid, she helped my edit my work and pushed me to improve. Erica worked with my schedule and helped me plan and organize my work to meet important deadlines. I highly recommend her, because she makes sure that you reach your goals.
English (Degree)
I was able to pass the class, but most importantly I was able to gain the skills I needed to earn my degree.

Imaginative tutor

Written by Sally W
Erica tutored my son on English. His work has become highly imaginative, better structured and he is excelling in English. Erica was part of nurturing his imagination whilst getting him to write in a structured way.

I hope she will work with my children again when needed.
Eleven Plus
He got through his entrance exam and did well in English sats.

Inspired and inspiring tutor

Written by Rachel Hugh J
Erica has been teaching my daughter from the age of about 7 to now when she is 10 years old and facing 11+ entrance. I originally appointed Erica not because my daughter was struggling but because I did not think that she was fully engaged or performing at school. Erica has completely changed that by delivering thoughtful and creative but rigorous lessons. She has managed to keep the lessons enjoyable and has brought the subject alive for my daughter whilst not compromising on structure, discipline and the more formal aspects. Almost tutoring by stealth... My daughter is very fond of Erica. She sees her as a friend and ally and looks forward to sessions with her (as much as would be normal for a 10 y.o.)! Erica's enthusiasm and undoubted talents in the subject allow her to engage with students and stimulate their curiosity. These are invaluable and somewhat rare skills at at time when the education system can seem too pressurised and factory-like at the expense of creativity and enjoyment.
My daughter is now amongst the highest achieving pupils in English in her year and feeling positive about, and well-prepared for 11+ English, and the exciting next stage of studying the subject. This
