About Emily

Enjoyment, enthusiasm and engagement

I love literature and language, from reading, discussing, and explaining great novels to writing poetry or technically analysing discourse, to helping young learners discover for themselves the fun of words - it's all exciting. I really appreciate the need for lively engagement when teaching, not as a perk but as a prerequisite.

My own early education prioritised student happiness, while my studies at Oxford University and now in my own PhD research have taught me the need for challenges and hard work. My tutoring style synthesises these experiences into a thorough but not arduous approach that is truly responsive to each student.

I have experience with learners from age 4 to 20. I currently lead seminars and am a 1:1 mentor for undergraduate students, and have also trained student volunteers for a student support service. Previously I have worked individually with primary-age children struggling at school, as their assistant in class and also in dedicated time outside of class to work on their specific needs. I've also worked running a creche, and volunteered to take primary age children on holidays away from the city.

As well as my training in teaching, I have been trained in active listening and student support - essential to any tutoring role!
