About Elisabeth
• I have over 30 years’ experience in teaching A level History, GCSE History and AS / A level Politics
• I completed a PhD at the Institute of Education, London, for which I researched students’ interpretations of historical sources. This has led to much greater understanding in the challenges students face in using sources and ways of meeting these challenges.
• I have prepared individuals and small groups of students for Cambridge and Oxford extrance exams in History, Politics, Law and related subjects and also helped students prepare for LNAT exams.
• I have experience as an examiner of GCSE, AS and A level history and in the development of the most recent specifications was employed as a reviewer of history specifications by Edexcel and of politics specifications by Ofqual.
• Having also had a range of pastoral roles in school (most recently as Equal Opportunities Lead), I have supported students from a wide range of backgrounds in overcoming challenges in their learning and developing the motivation to succeed.
• My A level History teaching involved predominantly Tudor and Stuart British History, sixteenth century European history, Historical Methodology and supervision of coursework and Personal Studies. However, my own recent reading relates to other periods and topics and the techniques I have developed to help students answer essay, source-based and interpretation questions are applicable to all historical periods.
• I have taught a wide range of topics at GCSE, including modern history, developments through time and Tudor history.
• In Politics, I have taught, UK and US Politics and Political Ideologies.

My tutoring style involves first exploring the prior knowledge a student may be bringing to a topic. This then enables me to identify the ways in which I can provide support in developing new conceptual understandings and strategies to master new content and tackle new questions. I aim to encourage students to think about the processes they are using so they can apply them in new contexts and thus become more independent in their learning. A crucial element of success in both History and Politics is the ability to put together material in a logical and convincing essay. I have explored a wide range of techniques to help students in this process. An aspect of history many students find challenging relates to the use of historical sources. My PhD research focused on this aspect of learning, leading to a much clearer understanding of why this often presents difficulties to students and of how these difficulties may be overcome.

Perfect! Elizabeth is superb, clear understanding and helps my son to understand how to analyse the History and Politics A Level content. Delighted to have found her.
Perfect! I wanted to express my gratitude for the intriguing lesson you provide. my son gave me positive feedback and found the lesson engaging. I will ask him to complete the assigned work and send it to you before our next lesson.
- Elisabeth's response :I was very impressed by Gerry's historical knowledge. We talked about Oliver Cromwell and Napoleon and why historians have been so interested in them. Gerry clearly thinks carefully about what he is learning and also shows initiative in reading about historical topics other than what he is learning about in school. It would be really useful for me to see a piece of his historical writing before next lesson so I have suggested he writes about a side of A4 answering the question 'What makes a successful leader?' using historical examples to support his points. It would be good if you could email this to be before next lesson. He also suggested sending me his school exam answers. If you have a scanner and can send them, that would also be interesting.
Perfect! Elisabeth has been helping our son with structure and content for his Year 12 History and Politics. He has gained good skills in essay writing, essay structure and content linking. Elisabeth has been very accommodating in trying to fit us in at times that suit us. I would highly recommend her.
- Elisabeth's response :Rob has very sound knowledge of the topics we have discussed, both history and politics. He is also learning to plan his points in a way to construct a coherent argument. We have considered how he could develop his introductions and conclusions and he would benefit from developing a more concise written style. Rob seems very receptive to advice and I have enjoyed working with him.
Perfect! I really like Elisabeths accurate feedbacks and detailed plans and ideas how to improve a students capabilities. I can definitely recommend her as a Tutor!
- Elisabeth's response :Sarah is a motivated student with an understanding of the key issues. To aim for the highest grades it would be good to do some detailed revision on a topic before a session so we can focus on applying it in the most effective way to exam questions.
Perfect! Skills in engaging student and teaching topic.
- Elisabeth's response :Yesterday we discussed a question on US elections. Elliot was able to suggest some relevant points and his understanding of others seemed to develop during the lesson. He has said he will write up the essay on the first day of his holiday, 22 December.
Perfect! Good lesson looking at exam questions . And looking at how to formulate answers
- Elisabeth's response :James had sent me answers to the questions we discussed last week. They showed some understanding and we spent quite a lot of the lesson discussing how expression could be improved and more detail included to explain points. James was able to identify some of the ways improvements could be made himself. He also needs to be careful to ensure that he selects relevant material to the period the question is asking about. We then discussed some questions relating to the next period. James has agreed to make notes relating to these and send them to me before next week's session so we can work together on applying these relevantly to the questions.
Best wishes
Elisabeth

Dr Pickles is an excellent teacher who is both knowledgeable and passionate about Politics. She has the rare gift of being able to support individual learning both in person and through online learning, provide constructive feedback on progress and build confidence. Each student under her care feels valued and hence self motivation and enjoyment of the subject go hand in hand. Without doubt, Dr Pickles is able to help her students reach their full potential.
Dr Elisabeth Pickles was my A Level History teacher at Highworth Grammar School and she helped to kindle my love for the practice of History, which led me to apply to study the subject at Cambridge. She was rigorous and lessons were exam- and curriculum-focused, but also very enjoyable and interactive, often discussion-based. I was always engaged because she has a way of conveying ideas and knowledge in interesting and dynamic ways. She is possibly the fairest and wisest person I have known, a very logical, lucid communicator and she has a great sense of humour. I cannot recommend her highly enough as a teacher!
Dr Pickles taught me for the entirety of my GCSE course, on Medicine Through Time and Elizabethan England, and for half of my A Level history course, on Stuart England and coursework about Oliver Cromwell. I greatly enjoyed her classes and particularly appreciated her deep-rooted enthusiasm for her subject. Dr Pickles always planned her lessons thoroughly, incorporating a mix of learning styles and tasks to stimulate our minds in multiple ways. She always ensured that all students contributed in class, so that discussions were even more engaging. I always felt comfortable asking for help or clarification, although there was little need for the latter. Dr Pickles covered each of our modules at a suitable pace and in a helpful level of detail, leaving enough time for revision, so that I felt very much at ease approaching the exams for the modules she had taught me.
Dr Pickles taught me both History and Politics A Level at Highworth Grammar School. Her lessons were always very engaging and her knowledge of the subjects is second to none.
Dr Pickles goes above and beyond to provide the highest standards of teaching to her students, and does her utmost to ensure each student is given the tools to realise their potential.

Elisabeth is an outstanding practitioner. She has a wealth of experience teaching GCSE and A-Level History (as well as A-Level Politics) with a proven track record of excellent results at a high-achieving school, via her ability to stretch and challenge all students of varying abilities. Elisabeth has experience as an examiner and has worked with exam boards in an advisory capacity on questioning. Consequently, Elisabeth's experience, subject knowledge and communication skills are such that she can be adaptable in her teaching and support students (whether this be through covering key historical content, working on exam technique, or developing thinking and analytical skills).
