About Edward
I am a Wells-based Clarinet/Saxophone Player/Singer/Composer with 6 years teaching experience to students between the ages of 10 to 80. I began playing at the age of 8 and have since gone on to perform as a soloist, and in various ensembles, in the Bristol/Mendip/BANES/Lancaster/Huddersfield areas.
Having played in and led various ensembles, I have a wide repertoire of music through Classical, Jazz, and Contemporary genres. I also received the Huddersfield University 2014 Woodwind Prize for my performance ability and involvement at the university.
In recent years, I received a Masters from Bristol University in Composition for Film and Television and have been writing music for the saxophone and clarinet, as well as other instruments, for both commercial purposes and my own.

Having been taught by a number of tutors over the years: Ben Waghorn, Paul Stinchcombe, Quita Colston, John Woodhouse, Sarah Markham, and most recently Joel Purnell, I am able to incorporate elements of the way they teach with the way I found comfortable learning.
Whether going through the grading system or just playing for fun, I structure lessons around the students' own abilities and what they want to achieve. I encourage learning to play in various genres, improvisation, and working with theory too should the student wish to.
Music is such a creative and therapeutic skill to have; I believe it is a shared learning experience that everyone should have the chance to develop, in a fun and supportive environment, where the student has just as much say as the tutor.

I have been having saxophone lessons now for approx. 18 months. Ed is engaging and happy to teach whatever genre I want whether it is Jazz, Classical etc. Lockdown has been difficult for me with trying to manage work and kids home schooling but Ed has done everything he can to accommodate the extra flexibility I have needed. Where I have needed to buy books, reeds or other items Ed has always sent me links for items he can recommend thus taking the pressure off me having to search around. He has infinite patience and is always approachable/ open to suggestions. I would definitely recommend him for people of all ages.
Ed has been teaching me clarinet for over 2 years now. Ed is an excellent teacher who balances flexibility of learning with technicalities of the instrument. For example, on expressing an interest in jazz clarinet improvisation, we have been doing some form of improvisation every lesson but at the same time developing the skills of writing music and learning to be expressive with the instrument.
I have noted significant improvements in my playing thanks to Ed’s suggestion of recording practice sessions which we also review in the lessons.
Overall I would highly recommend Ed as a music teacher since he is flexible with regards to your musical interests. I am surprised at the progress I have made in just 2 years.Meeting Ed was incredibly helpful for my daughter who had been missing her school lessons through lockdown. He was very patient and gentle to start allowing her to regain her confidence and slowly increased the content and practice requirements for each lesson providing great written feedback after each lesson and sending additional resources as needed.
Ed is a terrific teacher who has taken me from complete beginner to being able to play with confidence and enjoyment.
Ed's teaching style is fun, accessible and adaptive. Drawing on different methods and techniques, he'll expertly help you to overcome any challenges that present themselves, and to improve as effectively as possible. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the saxophone (and music) is extensive also and he covers all aspects from music theory and sheet reading to impovisation/soloing.
Moving to online lessons has been a smooth transition and I feel I've developed just as much as I would otherwise. In short, I'd highly recommend Ed.
My 13 year old daughter has been having saxophone lessons with Ed for the last 2 years. I am delighted with the progress she is making and she really enjoys her lessons. Currently lessons are on line due the covid crisis. Ed is careful to speak to me before and after lessons to provide feedback and allow me to voice any ideas or concerns. He also communicates homework tasks via email. I am copied into every communication for safeguarding reasons. I have no hesitation in recommending Ed.

In short, I'd highly recommend Ed.Ed has been teaching my 13 year old daughter the saxophone for a year. I'm so impressed by the progress she has made but more than that, she clearly enjoys her lessons. Since lock-down, lessons have moved on line and I'm entertained each week by hoots of laughter emanating from her room. Ed always sends both of us a written copy of homework and he updates me each week on her progress. I would highly recommend Ed.
I have been having clarinet Lessons with Ed for 18 months.
Ed is professional, very reliable and trustworthy. Ed has a good personality he is friendly and easy to talk to.
As a teacher Ed is a very supportive and extremely motivating. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about music which make lessons very enjoyable. I have learnt a great deal from Ed, not just about how to play the clarinet but how to enjoy playing music and be creative. With Ed’s support and teaching I have progressed with my playing much more than I ever thought I would. Ed has helped me appreciate the subtle nuances that have helped raise the level of my playing and my ability to discriminate between good playing and great playing. Ed comes highly recommended.
I have been learning saxophone with Ed for nearly eighteen months now and his skill as a teacher has really impressed me. I had no knowledge of the instrument at all when I started, but with Ed’s help I have managed to progress to a point where I can play and improvise confidently. Thanks to the guidance, feedback and encouragement he gives me I see an improvement in my playing every week. Not only is Ed a highly competent teacher, he is also an accomplished professional musician, highly proficient composer and has an extensive knowledge of all types of music. As well as never having played the saxophone before I started lessons, I had minimal understanding of music theory. However, thanks to Ed’s expert help, and considerable patience, I am making progress with that as well. Alongside developing as a saxophonist, I am slowly but surely learning to sight read and finding the process highly rewarding. In conclusion, I have nothing but praise for Ed’s friendly, motivational and inspiring style of teaching and recommend him highly.

He also helped me successfully audition into the University Orchestras after taking a 5-year break from music! I really enjoy the lessons and feel I have progressed massively since starting lessons with him. I'd definitely recommend him!
Having had both lessons in person and online, I can say I have learned so much from Ed and find his teaching really easy to follow and enjoyable! He has helped me to successfully prepare repertoire for University orchestra auditions, and also helps me with theory and some of my work/essays. Ed is flexible with the timing and structure of the lessons. I have never had online lessons before COVID - and I was a little skeptical about them, but actually, I find them just as good as lessons in person! I would definitely recommend Ed.
