Friendly, enthusiastic, and engaging tutor with 6 years Exp.

Hi, my name is Ned and I am a recent Oxford history Masters graduate with over six years of tutoring and teaching experience. I am passionate about my subject areas and find using my enthusiasm and expertise to guide students through discussion, debate and practice thoroughly rewarding.

I believe that with the right support, any student, no matter what their previous experience, can build their confidence and ultimately succeed. To this end, I seek to teach academic skills in a way that is both intellectually rigorous and engaging. I am encouraging and supportive, open yet disciplined, and particularly focused upon the specific needs of the student as an individual.

I spent 2011 working as an English teacher in Ukraine, and upon my return to the UK, spent a further year teaching and tutoring English in language schools in Southampton and Oxford, covering classes at all levels including Cambridge exams. Since completing my masters degree I have worked with students on history (Degree, A level and G.C.S.E.), politics (A level) and English as a foreign language.

In history and politics I have helped many students to synthesise course content, sharpen their argumentative and essay structuring skills, make carefully judged use of sources and hone their exam technique. Recent notable successes include elevating a student from a low C grade in history A level to a comfortable A in less than two months, and tutoring a student to an A grade at A level politics even after their school teacher had told them it was impossible.

I am often busy and though availability may not appear on my schedule at a convenient time, do not hesitate to message me as it is more than likely that we can arrange a time that suits us both.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Excellent Tutor

Ned is an excellent tutor. His lessons were inspiring and well planned. He created some terrific timelines which my daughter found of great use. She looked forward to his lessons and really enjoyed them.

One of the best English teachers I have ever had

Ned could explain English grammar very clearly, even for students from other cultures where tenses are not comparative to English ones. He also had a great relationship with every student in our class. What was important for me is that he is an open-minded person. He is interested in other cultures and people from different countries so I always felt comfortable. I should also mention his good manners and great sense of humour. We worked so hard over one month that I made progress from beginning intermediate level to advanced.

A very kind person and a really good teacher

I can only say good things about Ned. He is really patient; if there is anything you don’t understand, he finds another way to explain it to you. If we are reading a text and there are many words we don’t know, he spends all the time we need to understand it. He is also a cheerful and dynamic person, therefore his lessons are not boring at all; they are highly practical, interactive and entertaining. I always looked forward to studying and learning more things.
My English has improved notably. I am currently studying C1 (Advanced) level. It was Ned who encouraged me to move to a higher level this year and I am very happy about it.

Kind and open-minded teacher

I spent two months in Ned’s upper intermediate class during which I learnt a lot. We could always ask him if we had vocabulary and pronunciation problems and usually he has a nice idea that can help us to keep the words in our minds. He is a kind, open-minded and funny person and I was always excited about what we could learn next time.

Amazing tutor

Ned is definitely a miracle worker! Having never done history before and trying to tackle the A level in a few months, Ned was completely up for challenge and extremely supportive the whole time. Providing notes, marking essays and tailoring lessons to exactly what he felt I was most weak on. He's genuinely a really nice guy so lessons were never boring and felt more like a conversation than a lecture. The only regret I have is finishing history now so being unable to look forward to his lessons anymore! 100% recommended.

Extraordinary Tutor

We found Ned to be an extraordinarily good tutor, with first class ability, first class knowledge of his subject, the right approach to take with research, analysis, and essay writing, extremely conscientious and thorough, very patient and willing to make himself available at short notice, with an excellent ability to communicate and work with a young person who had mild dyslexia, and a tendency to panic at times ! We are quite sure that without his help our daughter would not have achieved such a good degree. Altogether very pleasant and easy to deal with.

An excellent 2:1 degree in History at a leading university and a First in the dissertation.

Huge success

Going into these holidays History was noticeably a weakness for my son. However, after Ned's tutoring it is now a strength. He has gone from achieving C\D in essays to now finding anything below an A a disappointment ! Ned was particularly useful in helping my son understand and target the key words within the question. We are very grateful and we would highly recommend him.

We won't know the results till August but definitely going to be significantly better thanks to Ned.

Other Qualifications

I have worked as a teacher of English as a foreign language for the last two-and-a-half years. I have taught in the U.K. and Ukraine, with students ranging in age from six to sixty, and in classes as well as a significant proportion on a one-to-one basis. I have found teaching thoroughly rewarding employment, and have endeavoured throughout to carry out my task in a rigorous but caring and engaging manner.
