Find out more about Dr Hassan

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From the onset of my GCSE studies, physics and mathematics have held a profound fascination for me. Surprisingly, even as I was mastering these subjects myself, I began tutoring mathematics to some of my senior peers. I possess a natural talent for elucidating complex concepts in both physics and mathematics, breaking them down into simpler terms. This innate ability motivated me to extend my assistance to university colleagues while I was still learning these subjects myself.

  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly specialize in teaching physics, mathematics, and related engineering subjects. Within pure mathematics, mechanics, and statistics, I cover all topics. Particularly, I take great pleasure in instructing statistics due to its fascinating practical applications. In the field of engineering, I offer courses on thermodynamics, heat transfer, vibration analysis, mechanics of materials, engineering statics, and dynamics. While I admit fluid mechanics poses some challenges, I manage to grasp the subject quite well most of the time.
As for GCSE and A-level physics, I thoroughly enjoy teaching all topics across different specifications. In the past, I faced some difficulty with particle and astrophysics, but with continuous effort, these areas have become much clearer to me now.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to learn from numerous skilled educators. Yet, one individual, my tutor for GCSE and A-levels physics and mathematics (whom I deeply admire), stands out as exceptionally devoted and proficient. Not only did he impart knowledge, but he also went above and beyond to ensure I truly grasped the concepts, encouraging comprehension rather than rote memorization. His teaching style has left a lasting impact on me, and I constantly strive to emulate his approach.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In my view, an effective tutor avoids overwhelming students with excessive information. Instead, they engage students using a 'query-based' learning approach, skillfully posing thought-provoking questions to stimulate the flow of concepts and foster a strong connection between the tutor and learners. Moreover, a good tutor remains receptive and composed, attentively addressing all student queries, even if they seem irrelevant or pertain to topics covered in earlier levels.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my mechanical engineering studies, I delved into the field of 'Gas-Turbine.' Together with my classmates, we endured lengthy and perplexing lectures from the professor, struggling to comprehend the content. Throughout the entire semester, it seemed as though this subject was beyond our grasp, reserved only for specialized experts or some mysterious cult. Despite studying closely related subjects like heat transfer and fluid mechanics, we still couldn't make sense of the material being presented.
However, a turning point came when I stumbled upon an intriguing saying: "If you want to learn something new, explore the wisdom of old books." Intrigued by this idea, I decided to consult the relevant books on the topic. To my astonishment, I found that the subject was actually straightforward and captivating.
I now frequently share this experience to inspire my students to embrace the habit of "opening the book." In today's digital age, where 'googling' has become the norm, I encourage them to explore the depth and richness of knowledge that can be found in traditional sources.

  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Given that only a few students pursue further mathematics in A-level, I take it upon myself to refresh my knowledge on those topics before explaining them to the students. Consequently, students need to inform me of the specific topics they would like to review in further mathematics before we delve into them. Occasionally, I may require extra time to address any queries they raise.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in teaching, and I find immense joy in witnessing my students' "ah-ha" moments when they grasp a concept. Observing their knowledge expand and even surpassing my own at times brings me great satisfaction. I believe that parents and teachers are the only ones who genuinely rejoice when their children and students excel beyond their achievements. Such rewarding experiences are unique to the world of education.

  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions?

I believe my innate talent lies in communicating with students on their level rather than adopting a professorial demeanour, which qualifies me to be recognized as a "Superprof." By attentively observing voice intonations, response times, thoughtful pauses, and the sparkle in their eyes, I can gauge the strength of the communication bond I share with my "Superstudents." This, in my view, is the crucial factor that allows me to foster a deeper interest in the subject among my students.
