About Dorothy

Experienced Science and Corporate Finance Tutor

I graduated in Chemical Engineering, became a qualified chartered accountant (ACA) and have over a decade of post qualification experience in accounting, audit and finance. I am now taking a career break to study a PhD in Chemical Engineering. It is something I have always wanted to do and indulges my love of numbers and numerical analysis. I am uniquely placed to tutor the sciences (Maths, Physics and Chemistry) as well as Accounting and Finance

I am passionate about numbers and this has drawn me to both my profession and my PhD. I am particularly excited by the A-Level syllabus and university mathematics. My degree subject of Chemical Engineering applies the sciences and allows me to relate to those who need to apply science to enjoy it. Engineering has also taught me about computers, be that Microsoft based packages or more detailed computer programming. Writing simulations and presenting work are what I do each day... and I love it!

Accountancy sprang out of my love of numbers and I still retain a keen interest in it. Initially, my clients ranged from sole traders to medium sized firms. I spent a large portion of time working for a Big Four accountancy firm, where my clients were multinational financial service entities. I know the stress of the professional accountancy exams, but can assure you that it was worth it in the end and I am able to pass on tips to students.

By forming good relations with my students and explaining the required concepts clearly, I manage to keep them interested in their subjects. Having achieved top grades in A-levels myself, I am able to guide my students to achieve exam success. My priority during tutoring is to tailor each of my lessons according to individual students, which is the key aspect of one-to-one tutoring. I work through the concept with an example, the student tries a few questions and then we work through any problems together.

In my free time, I like food, fitness and traveling. I particularly enjoyed Australia and hope to visit Scandinavia this summer. The more difference people bring to the table, the more fun we can have.

I am happy to teach anyone and mature students are especially welcome. Send me a message and we can discuss the specifics of your situation and take things from there.

Honestly, the BEST tutor you could ask for

Written by Richard B
Dorothy is simply amazing. I just passed my accountancy exam (which I had failed 3 times in a row before) with flying colours and it was all because of her.

She takes the time to listen to you and understand where you feel like you are having problems and then she works along side you to find the best and most comfortable way to deal with those problems.

One thing that I really liked is that she has absolutely no problem with explaining a topic again and again and again, until you understand it. And she will explain it with different examples each time which is so helpful.

I really enjoyed the sessions I had with Dorothy too because she’s a really easy person to get along with and really nice. She was enthusiastic and passionate about everything she taught and
was organized and was always prepared for each session.

Honestly I don’t think 5 stars is enough, she deserves 10 stars!

Great first lesson

Really enjoyed the first lesson. We cover chi squares which is complex. Dorothy made it simple and easy to understand. She was patient and understanding. I found as ease telling her what I didn't understand. She even stayed over the hour to help me finish off my homework. Would highly recommend.

Great tutor!

Dorothy has filled many gaps in my knowledge, as well as making me feel a lot more confident and interested in the subject. Dorothy's teaching style is perfect for me. Any question I throw out at her she is able to respond back with a very easy and clear explanation, making studying a lot less daunting. She is extremely patient and if you don't understand a topic she will explain it over and over again. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying with her!
Thanks Dorothy!

Lesson was good

Written by Wahida R
The lesson went good but not brilliant because I didn't feel that I have learnt much from the tuition. We worked from the pro-forma set in the book so all we did was copy and inserted data from the question we were working on. Once or twice she entered the data in the wrong field and I had to correct her also when we completed the balance sheet it didn't balance and I wasn't given an explanation as to why it didn't balance so I wasn't much happy about that.

Anyhow, maybe because it was the first time the lesson didn't go as well as predicted therefore I will book again with her in the near future.

Dorothy responded quickly and efficiently to my initial enquiry. The session was well tailored to my needs and abilities; the pace was just right and and time taken to explain answers. I found Dorothy patient and conscientious and would recommend her.

Excellent first lesson

Written by Joe I
Dorothy was hugely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and found easy ways to explain statistical indices through basic examples which I initially found challenging.

On top of this, firstly, Dorothy spent a further 30 minutes with me until we finished the test we were working through. Secondly, she instigated a Skype call the following morning to go over the spreadsheets we had been working on previously.
