About David
(Last updated: October 2023)
Hello, I am a successful tutor with many years of teaching experience, both in the classroom and in private tuition. I have spent 8 years as a full-time qualified teacher and then 8 years as a tutor with over 5,000 hours of lessons taught. I am currently teaching a range of pupils from Year 4 to Year 8, from both state and independent schools. Some of my pupils are aiming for 11+ or other competitive exams while others are getting some extra help to give their learning a boost and develop more confidence in their abilities.
Over the years my students have received multiple offers from a wide range of schools, including Alleyn's, Benenden, City of London, Dulwich College, Emanuel, Epsom College, Francis Holland Regent's Park and Francis Holland Sloane Square, Harrodian, King's Wimbledon, JAGS, RGS Guildford, St Dunstan's, St Mary's Ascot, St Paul's, Sevenoaks, Streatham and Clapham, Sydenham High, Tonbridge, Westminster, Wimbledon Girls and Woldingham.
I have done short-term (2-6 weeks) in-person tutoring engagements in Croatia, France, Italy and Dubai, and have tutored students who were online in Europe, North America and UAE. I welcome enquiries about lessons from abroad and from homeschoolers too.
I hold a current DBS certificate, which is renewed annually.
My extensive experience of teaching children in Years 5 and 6 means that I am especially qualified to support children working towards 11+ and secondary transfer tests. I have very good subject knowledge of the primary and 11+ curriculum and beyond, and have worked extensively with children on their English and Maths, helping them to make progress whatever their age or ability. As my references show, I have also successfully supported children with learning difficulties and special needs like dyslexia.
I can support home schooling and also assist adult conversational and EFL practice. Please ask me about availability during the school day and office hours.
I have been a qualified teacher since 2007 and worked as a full-time primary school class teacher in both Key Stage 1 and 2, mainly in Years 5 and 6. I have been tutoring children since 2014, teaching children from Year 1 up to Year 10.
I like to use my knowledge and experience to help people to learn and make progress, and I get a great sense of achievement out of that. As a teacher, I have learned how to use my skills to get the best out of students - a positive relationship is important, as is a sense of humour!
I have also worked for City of Westminster Archives on its educational projects, teaching local school children about WW1 and Remembrance, the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-Saxons, and I was the MCC's Community Teacher at Lord's Cricket Ground, helping to deliver its community education programme to local schools.
Away from teaching, I am married and we have 3 sons. I love sport, especially cricket and rugby, the arts, reading and all those things that enhance our lives.

I'm a teacher of English, Maths and Reasoning to children aged 8 to 14. Often, teaching will be in preparation for 11+ assessments in the UK, but I also support pupils who need either to catch up at school, or have special needs, or who would benefit from being challenged more than they are at school; sometimes, my pupils just need help with their homework!
Lessons are usually one hour long, taking place after school from Monday to Friday, or on Saturdays. Most of my lessons are online, or in-person if students live close to me in Camberwell.
I welcome students from outside the UK. I have undertaken teaching assignments in France, Italy, Croatia and Dubai. I have also taught students online who were in the UAE, continental Europe and the USA.
Lessons should be engaging and also enjoyable, but also productive. Doing homework is recommended, especially for those preparing for 11+, although the workload is always set with the blessing of the parent.

Perfect! David was helping my daughter through all her 11+ year, we’d a lot useful material from David and also friendly & patient teaching. Thanks for all of this.
Perfect! Excellent Tutor
David is helping my son through the 11+ entrance exams into UCS. David is thorough, patient and tenacious. He has high expectations and my son is now delivering, when he wasn't before we began lessons with David.
Subject : 11+ School Exam Preparation
Outcome : My son can see his marks improving. He enjoys the respect he gets from his classmates and English is now his favourite subject.Perfect! Help with post lockdown learning
Having witnessed some on line lessons during lockdown I was pretty sure that my son was not learning much. One to one sessions with David have helped him hugely.
Outcome : He has since gone on to clear the pre test for some of the most competitive schools in the country. A miracle from where we were a year ago.Perfect! Best 11 plus tutor
David made all of the difference to my son’s successful performance on the 11 plus exams. With David’s help he received offers from the best schools in London. Our son needed to learn how to organise and present his 11 plus writing and understand how to impress during the interview process. With David’s calm demeanour, good humour and clear instruction, my son really listened and learned so much. I have already recommended David at least 5 times to my friends and will continue to recommend him as extraordinarily effective tutor.

Outcome : Offers from top London secondariesPerfect! Excellent tutoring and support
We enlisted David’s help to support our son, aged 10 with maths in preparation for senior school selection. David was excellent in instilling a better understanding and grasp of the basics, working each week to consolidate learning but more importantly build confidence and a positive attitude and approach. I have no doubt that this hugely contributed to our son’ successful end of year results.
Subject : Maths
Outcome : Successful entry to senior schoolPerfect! Great teacher and supportive
David taught our daughter English for independent school 11+ exams. His lessons were always interesting and enjoyable and she would come out smiling. She was very well prepared by the time the exams came round and able to enjoy the English papers rather than being stressed. We will be going back to David in a few months for support with preparing our son for the 11+ and have passed his details on to friends. Highly recommended.

We hired David to help out with our 6 year’s old transition from State to Independent school.
We only have one child and did not have the privilege of past experience. After trying a number of tutor websites and agencies, we finally decided to stick with Tutor Fair due to their speed of response and excellent customer services.
When we identified David as our ideal tutor, were still not sure until our daughter had her first session. After her session she was very keen to have David as her teacher and wanted us to negotiate with her school so that he could replace her school teacher, unfortunately she was disappointed that this was not possible.
Our daughter has enjoyed her lessons greatly, her performance has improved remarkably and she has now moved from the bottom to the upper quarter.
As parents, we learnt a lot from David, pointing us in the right direction for our daughter’s resources i.e music sessions, handy tips, links to websites, reading materials the list is endless.
In summary, we have found our experience with David very fruitful and value for money, unfortunately we are leaving Camberwell for Guilford hence the reason we have to terminate our contract. We hope we will find a match to David otherwise our daughter will not forgive us.
As first timers, it was a daunting process but Tutor fair and David made the whole process smooth and enjoyable. We would not hesitate to recommend David to any parent looking for a private tutor.

Outcome : Our daughter has enjoyed her lessons greatly, her performance has improved remarkably and she has now moved from the bottom to the upper quarter.Perfect! Thoughtful, encouraging,
David teaches maths to my three kids, now aged 11, 13 and 13. I have seen their understanding and confidence in maths grow with his help. He is thoughtful, encouraging and calming. He has a really nice manner with them, talking to them as equals and gently discovering where confusions lie and finding ways to clarify and explain. His years of experience really show - I can tell he's worked with kids of all abilities and he has found ways to connect with each child. My children really trust his way of explaining things. He's a great tutor and I really recommend him.
Outcome : Huge improvement for each child which I've seen in their grades. My daughter was in bottom set in her old school and is about to go into top set in her new school.Perfect! Struggling shy student to teaching the class!
My 8 year old daughter was struggling with her maths. We had tried other tutors but nothing seemed to be sticking with her. She was starting to get the impression she was 'no good at maths' which I thought would be hard to shift once set in. David's delicacy, patience and humour coupled with his knowledge of the maths school curriculum brought her gradually up to speed. She knows her times tables now. This term was taken out of the extra maths class in school. She also volunteered to take a maths class in adding and subtracting decimals at school. It has been great to see her confidence grow, with David's encouragement. This has really been a huge turn around in 6 months.
Subject : Maths
Outcome : A great success.Perfect! outstanding!
With the helped of M.Ward, my son got an academic scholarship from our first choice of private school. Needless to say, we are over the moon. I thoroughly recommend Mr.Ward as a first rate English and maths tutor.
Outcome : OutstandingPerfect! Review by Toby age 10
Mr Ward was really great. I didn't like doing reading comprehensions, and writing stories even less! He made it seem fun. Now it's all over I can look back and remember how much Mr.Ward helped me.
Outcome : Fantastic!Perfect! Subject : Non-verbal communication
Perfect! David has been working with my son for a few weeks now, mainly reading comprehension and writing. As a primary school teacher, he knows exactly what is expected and is doing a great job of drawing ideas out of my son (who can be very reluctant when putting pen to paper!). I would definitely recommend him.

David is a calm, thoughtful and knowledgeable tutor who prepared our daughter for her 11+ exams (English part). She has received three offers, including offers from Kingston Grammar School and Emanuel School. We would highly recommend David to anyone, and my daughter enjoyed his teaching style and improved her English a lot (especially comprehension and vocabulary). Thank you, David!
David helped prepare our daughter for her 11+ exams this year, focusing mainly on Maths but keeping an eye on her VR/NVR skills as well. The fact that our daughter readily signed in for her online sessions, every Saturday morning for about eight months, says it all: David is engaging, patient, unfailingly professional — and his vast experience (not just with the subject matter but also in assessing strengths and weaknesses, adapting to individual learning styles, and adjusting his teaching to the specific 11+ approach of each school) is apparent at all times. We highly recommend him.
(The most appropriate option for David's role was not in the above list.)
David worked as a class teacher at St Matthew's CE Primary School from 1st September 2013 until 31st May 2015. St Matthew’s is a one form entry church school in the centre of Westminster. Currently, there are 200 pupils on roll, 62% of whom have English as an Additional Language, and 29% entitled to FSM. I began working with David in January 2014 when I joined the school as Headteacher.
David taught across all areas of the curriculum within Year 5 and 6 and also led a extra curricular activities including a Computing Club and a Maths Club. He was very aware of the importance of enrichment activities within the curriculum and was involved in a range of projects to enhance the children’s learning and experiences.
David’s class had a wide variety of behavioural, social and academic needs including a pupil with a full time statement for Special Educational Needs; he worked closely with the Senior Leadership Team and other colleagues to ensure that all pupils' needs were met. He differentiated plans accordingly to ensure pupils working below, at and above age related expectations were fully challenged in all lessons. He used assessment procedures appropriately to track pupils' progress and attainment and reported this to parents both formally and informally. David was also involved in monitoring meetings with the Senior Leadership Team throughout the year to track pupil progress and attainment.
David followed all school policies and procedures appropriately. He consistently demonstrated excellent behaviour management and the children responded well to his high expectations. David built positive and friendly relationships with pupils, parents and staff at school and was professional in his outlook.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.Thank you for asking me to be a referee for David Ward. I am delighted to vouch for one of the best primary school teachers I have worked with through my role as Education Officer at Westminster Archives in the past decade.
I have known David for around eight years. This was initially through projects we ran at both Burdett Coutts and St Matthew’s primary schools, at both of which David taught Y6 children. Neither of these schools has an easy catchment area and this is what made me aware of David’s capability as a teacher. He has an aura of quiet authority, which meant that discipline was never a problem in the classroom. However this was not the only quality David possessed. He is a committed teacher who would always go above the call of duty to deliver an inspiring curriculum to the children he taught. Every time I brought a project to him he would take it one step further. For example when we ran a project on Charles Darwin he built on our history work by developing cross curricular strands in maths and science. Only the most dedicated teachers in my experience do this and this is typical of David’s dedication to his profession.
When David told me he was leaving St Matthew’s school I made a move to employ him as a freelancer to help me deliver our education programme. He helped me with our WW1 Centenary project, which involved leading sessions with ten local schools at the Household Cavalry Museum at Horse Guards in November 2015. David’s work on this project was critical to its success. His commitment to his work makes him stand out from other freelancers I have used who would not display such a conscientious attitude.
David is a great team player. I spoke to a number of staff and they shared my view that David’s work for us had been outstanding. One particular quality, which many people noted in David was his determination and perseverance. He never accepts second best.
David has a friendly pleasant nature and all of the staff at Westminster Archives has appreciated his contribution.
I can strongly recommend David and am confident that he will prove to be a valuable addition to your staff.David worked for me for a number of years as a teacher in a primary school where I was the headteacher. I would happily have David Ward tutoring my children. He is a committed individual who works hard and has a good understanding of teaching and learning. He is calm and measured and children relate very well to him. He is equally able in teaching children in Y6 as he was in teaching children in Y1, which is quite a skill in itself. As an individual David is well read, and has a very broad educational background which enhances the way he teaches and means he is very knowledgeable. I would have no hesitation in recommending David to you as an excellent tutor
A fantastic tutor who teaches not only with enthusiasm and diligence but with humor. Mr. Ward has been tutoring my daughter since September 2014. My daughter, who has learning difficulty (dyslexia) found it hard to catch up with english and maths during her primary school years. Her maths and English levels was low (2/3) - by the end of Year 6 at the time that Mr. Ward started tutoring my daughter . In the beginning he assessed my daughter in these subjects and he was able to put strategies in place to help her understand and for her to put in practice what she had learnt with him. I have seen how my daughter has progressed in the year. She is now working towards Level 5/6 and is much more confident in completing her homework by herself thanks to Mr. Ward's determination and commitment.

I try to be as flexible as possible about missed lessons, but I do ask that parents always keep me as up to date as possible.
I do not expect lessons to continue automatically during the holidays, but can usually accommodate those who want to maintain their schedule, especially if entrance exams are coming up; the autumn half-term and Christmas holiday periods are always busy! There can also be more flexibility over lesson times during the holidays.
