Dave Beech, DipELS, BA (Hons)

I have been teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages since 1999. I have my own office in the centre of Selby, easily accessible from York, Leeds and the surrounding area. I have taught children, young people, and adults from all over the world, and at all levels of ability. I have also prepared students for the Cambridge KET and FCE exams, the IELTS, and the GCSE English O-level.
Since 2015, I have taught the ESOL Skills for Life course at Entry Level 2 at Selby College. I select, create, and prepare all the resources and deliver 2 lessons of 150 minutes a week to adults. Since March 2017, I have been working with Middle Eastern and African refugees in Leeds, providing them with the language skills necessary for finding work and integrating into life in the UK. My private students are almost exclusively Polish, and need help with English for work and social interaction, although I have had students from all corners of the globe over the years. I have helped many children and young learners with their English schoolwork, particularly their reading and writing skills. I have also created an academic writing course, which I deliver online to students on Beijing, who are studying for the American ACT and SAT exams.
My experience with non-native speakers means I am able to explain complex ideas in a simple way. I can show students how to communicate in clear, unambiguous language. This has been invaluable in my work with native speakers, particularly GCSE students, who need to express their ideas and opinions with clarity, concision, and coherence. I specialise in literary analysis, and essay writing skills, covering sentence, paragraph, and essay structure, coherence, cohesion, and concision in the conventional academic style, referencing, character, plot, and theme in novels, short stories, plays (including Shakespeare), and poetry.
Aside from teaching, I am also a published writer of short stories, currently working on my first novel. I have created Facebook sites dedicated to ESOL teaching and fiction writing, and regularly contribute to Scriggler.com and Niume.com. websites for independent authors.

Reference for Dave Beech

Dave Beech was my private tutor when I lived in England, and has been teaching me online for some time. I am an electrical engineer, and I need English to communicate with my German manager, my fellow engineers, and international clients.
Dave is the best English teacher I’ve ever had. His knowledge of the English language is superb, and he explains everything clearly. He has taught me how to be more precise in my use of language, as well as how to expand a simple idea or condense a complex one. He shows how theory is related to practice, and has helped me enormously in my academic, professional, and personal life.
