About Daniel

An English and admissions specialist with an emphasis on building confidence for school and work, I help my students get the best from their exams and interviews, and develop winning essay, writing and communication skills.

I am a full-time professional tutor with a Master's in English and 25 years' experience in excellence, having worked at Goldman Sachs for 15 years, and previously in publishing and as a journalist. I founded the independent publishing house Sidan Press and am the author of five books, including, most recently, a guide for interviewing: "Interview Superpower".

I am available between sessions anytime for email and telephone queries.

INTRO

I have been a professional tutor for more than ten years now, teaching English language and literature at all levels for all school grades up to university and beyond, as well as for adults and visitors from overseas. This includes business writing and creative writing. I am passionate about sharing knowledge and showing my students ways to learn deeply and effectively.

I specialise in 11+ exams and admissions, interview skills for work and school, GCSE English, creative writing, essay writing, and confidence-building including public speaking and presentation skills, invaluable for school entrance and getting ahead in business.

I am the author of five books - two novels, a travel guide, a children’s book, and, most recently (published in 2022) a how-to guide for interviews - as well as many short stories and articles.

Before tutoring full time, I worked professionally in publishing and finance, with 15 years at Goldman Sachs, and as an international journalist.

APPROACH

I am friendly and humanistic in my approach, that is, I engage directly with my students to foster a warm and open environment that allows deep learning.

With effective and lasting ways to improve results, I help my students gain the skills they need to flourish and to achieve the highest marks. At the same time, they will often become more confident and enthusiastic about what they are studying, an attitude that spreads to other subjects too.

11+

11+ has become a crucial milestone in the school system but presents tough obstacles too. Competition is hot for the best schools, and dedicated home tuition often brings great results. I always work in tandem with what my students are learning at school. It can be invaluable for them to focus on problem areas and hone their sharp edges too.

I have had exceptional success with getting students into all the top London schools, often with multiple offers. My approach includes mock exams near exam time and interview practice in just the right amount so as not to appear too rehearsed!

GCSEs

Similarly, the GCSE landscape is as tricky as ever. Several boards have changed their curriculum in recent years, some more than once, and there are new grade structures to deal with as well as greater competition than ever to filter students up towards the right A-levels and choice of university access.

I work with students to cover all aspects of their course material with many specific exam techniques that ensure maximum performance at the critical time. The English exams are a combination of obstacle course and writing race, and, truer than ever, every little helps.

WRITING

All kinds of writing covered - academic, business, and personal.

If creative writing is your aim, we can focus on that. I can share with you top tips and techniques from twenty years of professional and creative writing experience, and the difficulties - and solutions thereof! - of getting what’s in our head (and heart) onto the page.

And if you just need to get ahead in class or in the office, or to face down any demons you may have, then we can do that. English is nothing to be afraid of, and it has a great deal to celebrate.

STUDY:LIFE

I specialise in helping my students prioritise what to focus on and to see improvement quickly. I often receive feedback saying how I have motivated students to feel more positive about learning, which is a lovely compliment.

As a writer, I have five books published and a regular series of newspaper columns. For a number of years, I was the director of a small publishing company based in London.

This means I have a lot of practical experience on both sides of producing and appreciating texts. This understanding is core to my teaching and lets me help you to engage with English in a more rounded and useful way.

We will take time at the beginning to carefully evaluate your needs and to decide exactly on the best course for you to take.

INTERVIEWS & PUBLIC SPEAKING

Published in a revised, post-Covid edition in 2022, my book Interview Superpower is available from all online stores, and is packed with easy-to-read tips to make your interview process positive, successful, and even fun.

As a trained interviewer I conducted hundreds of interviews in a corporate setting as well as reviewed thousands of CVs. As a tutor, I help students and adults alike to pinpoint what to focus on in their interviews and to practice and feel confident for the big day. I can also show you how to craft ace personal statements, and introduction and query letters.

I specialise too in teaching public speaking and presentation, helping you to get up in front of other people to deliver with self-assurance and poise, and even to enjoy it!

SKYPE / ZOOM / TEAMS / MEET

As we all know by now, lessons online are a highly effective way to keep on top of study. I offer online classes on all the main platforms, as well as video feedback for your work, essays, writing, etc. You can see a feedback video example here: (concealed information)

I look forward to hearing from you and to helping you get the most from your lessons.

Please get in touch with any questions you may have or to discuss your requirements. I am available seven days a week and am based in Central and North West London.

Thank you.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've loved reading and writing ever since I can remember. My first student was at 16: a friend's brother who was struggling with his English; I loved helping him and seeing him progress and grow in confidence.

I tutored for a while after university too. Then, after working in publishing and finance, I returned to tutoring full-time about ten years ago now, and I find it more and more rewarding all the time.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My main subjects are Reading, Writing and Speaking, as well as the various hurdles of the schools' admissions process, which include 11+, GCSEs, Verbal Reasoning, Interview Technique, Confidence, Work and Organisation Skills, and so on.

I also teach Public Speaking and Presentation, and Advanced Writing for Fiction, Business and Journalism, all areas in which I've had professional experience, including four books published (a novel, a travel guide, an interview handbook, and a collection of short stories), and editing credits for several others.

At the heart of all of these is expression, and feeling more confident about how we communicate with others and the world around us. Even more simply put, I'm interested in helping my students to feel more Okay about these matters, rather than Not Okay, or struggling.

For hundreds of thousands of years, we human apes have communicated our ideas to one another using various forms of language. Only relatively recently has this taken the form of writing with alphabets and reading texts. Already, before our eyes, this is changing with the advent of speech-to-text and audio digital technology. How we exchange ideas may well look different in a generation's time, and this developing landscape is a topic I often find useful to discuss with my students too.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Two teachers in particular stand out for their profound and personal inspiration, one at school and one as an adult, but there have been many people along the way who have helped and illuminated and generally been brilliant!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Deep knowledge and understanding of the subject, patience, organisation, and a genuine interest in - and ability to connect with - students; plus having some fun!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was little my grandpa told me it was important to be able to say: "I did my best." I didn't really understand the implications then of what he was saying but now I think it is a very powerful principle and highly applicable to learning and education, where we constantly face new challenges and obstacles/opportunities.

Indeed, in my life, where before I may have looked back at things that might have gone wrong or been problematic, nowadays I am resolutely forward-thinking and determined to begin 'Now' and make the very best of whatever the situation may require.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Good writing is often difficult. By its nature, we must open ourselves up to the unknown, the source of creativity and flow and the mysteries of language, not to mention any gnarly ideas we're trying to work through and organise.

I remember vividly as a kid wanting to put down onto the page the flow of words in my head - which could seem sometimes so effortless and free-flowing and great! - but struggling as soon as I had pen in hand. I've spent a great deal of time since, looking at this mechanism and working out how to do it effectively, which I love to share in my teaching.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Sharing ideas and watching students light up when they turn a corner, reach a new level, turn out a great piece of work, or know that they are learning something worthwhile.

On the side, I like to write - I've a collection of short stories coming out later this year, and I play African drums and saxophone.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I want my students to be the best they can be and to succeed in whatever sphere of endeavour they strive, and I do everything I can to help them reach their goals and, hopefully, to enjoy the journey (which I'd say is an essential ingredient, especially in English and writing).
