About Daniel

Hi!

I’m Daniel. I'm 25, currently living in Solihull and working as a Senior Data Scientist for the UK Home Office. I'm offering maths tuition from primary to A-level. I have been tutoring for over 6 years and have delivered over 1500 hours of lesson time.

My academic background consists of a 1st class in Mathematics BSc followed by a Distinction in Electrical Automotive Engineering MSc.

I decided to start tutoring during my 2nd year at university in London. After my own classes, I would drive around the streets of South West London tutoring students from primary to degree level (at that time). It was a great way to meet people, improve their grades but also ensure that my fundamentals remained fresh! Over the last few years, online tutoring has become the main way I tutor. I've made this work just as well as face-to-face tutoring by using an iPad and online whiteboard (read more below).

What improvement can you expect to see? On average, my students improve by about 2-3 grades from their predicted grade, depending on the length of time I have with them and several other factors.

What can you expect from me? I value every single on of my students. I want them to succeed. So, tutoring requires more than just imparting knowledge, it's about making sure the surrounding factors are in order. The knowledge, mindset and organisation need to work together in harmony to achieve one's best result. So you can expect to see me go above and beyond to enable them to do their best. This can mean doing over-time, or helping with quick impromptu questions over text.

** What can I expect in the first lesson? **
The first lesson is aimed at gauging the strengths and weaknesses of the student. I usually ask a few questions and set a small assessment covering multiple areas of the curriculum. I also ask students to send me any recent results/papers to help me speed this process up.

** What can I expect from a typical lesson? **
My lessons will typically commence with a starter activity which targets a random part of the curriculum. The activity helps me to continually update the students tracking profile on what topics they are succeeding at and what they need more work on. After this, I usually focus on a specific topic which needs work. This will involve a period of teaching followed by a period of practise. If there is time, this process can be repeated for more topics. At the end of the lesson, we reflect on what we covered and set homework to solidify learning.

** How do I teach online? **
For my students to see my handwriting, I use an iPad with an Apple Pencil. I use an online whiteboard where I can write freely or import and annotate documents. Students can also write on here. For video calls and setting homework, I like to use Google Classroom. All of this means that online lessons are identical to face to face ones!

** How do I track progress? **
I use Notion, a work-spacing tool to track the progress of every one of my students. This gives me the ability to plan exactly what to work on each week as well as provide parents and students real time progress. I have a link to a GCSE template here: (concealed information)

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    I sparked an interest in Data Science during a machine learning project I did at university. I found it quite fun building models which could do all sorts of things: distinguish between cats and dogs in photos or forecast stock prices. Luckily, I've managed to become a data scientist and am continuing to learn a lot every day!

    In terms of private tutoring, I often helped out my peers at school and university and they would often compliment my ability to teach. I found it quite fun and rewarding doing it, so I thought "why not do this as a part-time job"? I've never looked back since.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    I tutor maths up to A-level. I enjoy showing my students two perspectives to the problem. For example, for a lot of maths topics, there's a 'graphical' and 'algebraic' way of looking at the problem. Understanding them together enables students to build their own answers to the hardest of questions, instead of just following a script, which often happens in school. So if you pick me as your tutor, expect to be drawing a lot of graphs!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    I had a great maths teacher growing up. I was the type of student who raised his hand many times during the lesson, but he was patient enough to answer every time (albeit with some jokes at my expense). As a result, I learned a lot. My tutoring style is much the same, always encourage students to ask questions.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    I think tutoring is a mixture of teaching and mentoring. Teaching is about imparting knowledge, which is the most fundamental aspect of tutoring in my opinion.

    Mentoring is about guiding the student in general. This can be as simple as asking the student how they are getting on with things. Or it can be helping students get organised with their notes and books. Tracking student progress is also a great way to support students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    There was a little bit more pressure to get answers right in my maths class, not least because my teacher had a thumbscrew he would sarcastically threaten to use. He was also a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. As you can imagine, behaviour wasn't an issue in class. I came face to face with the thumb screw many times but luckily my thumbs are still in tact!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    I've had students who have really been let down by their teachers at school. It has opened my eyes a bit into the disadvantages some students go through. It ultimately results in a lot of stress and disappointment for those who genuinely want to work hard for a good grade.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    My passions are tutoring, cars, data science, football, squash and tennis in no particular order!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

    I think I've built up enough experience to have made a positive impact on many people's lives. That's what I'm here for, to help people open doors through achieving their potential in maths.
