Teaching is a privilege. I get to play a part in someone’s musical education, developing a skill who knows what they’ll do with!? Children are immensely creative, teachers give them the tools (how to bow, reading music, understanding theory etc) to share their music.

- What do you teach?
Violin and Piano.
(Viola, Cello and Music Theory available on request)
- Who do you teach?
Anyone who wants to learn! I teach roughly equal numbers of adult learners and children/young people.
- Will you travel to me?
Yes, I do all my teaching in students’ homes or online.
- How much are lessons?
£25 for 1 hour (adult learners) or £15 for 30min (children/young people)
- Is there a minimum level?
No! Complete beginners very welcome! As long as you have an instrument (and if you don’t I can advise you on buying one second hand) no prior experience of learning music or reading music required.
- Is there a maximum level?
Not yet! I currently teach 3 adults at grade 8 (2 violin, 1 piano). My students have passed grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. No one has failed an exam. Some have passed with merit!
- Do you put students in for exams?
Yes but only if they/their parents want to. I think exams are really useful but it’s ultimately up to you. For violin exams I’ll accompany (on piano) for free. For piano exams I just turn up for moral support :-)
- What’s the best thing about being a violin/piano tutor?
Seeing the joy when a child, young person, or adult plays something they never thought they could play.
- What’s the best thing about learning violin/piano?
Those moments where you make a sound which says more than any words.

A few years ago Dan was instrumental in preparing our son for his grade 1 piano exam. He managed to get the best out of him enabling him to pass with distinction.
