About Clarence
I have a couple of years of experience in regard to teaching the piano. I have taught two primary school children and one secondary school child over the period of a year. As well as developing piano technique, I have developed their musicianship through the use of aural activities and improvisation and to think about the different elements of music and how they help to express certain characteristics within the music. I also like to use games and activities away from the piano to explain new concepts or to help them understand concepts that they are finding hard to grasp.
I also liaised with parents so that I could inform them of progress. Since I was teaching as part of a university module, I also wrote reports to submit back to my mentor as well as reflecting on my teaching and how I could improve on it. I noticed that I needed to be more creative which I have responded to by implementing some musical games and improvisation into my teaching rather than teaching by the book. I also planned out my lessons and created a curriculum plan for the year for my pupils. This has all resulted in preparation for end of year concerts as well as a duet with one of my pupils for RNCM’s Piano Day.
Continuing professional development is important so I have attended a training course at Chetham’s School of Music ad St Pauls Girls School where they introduced topics such as simultaneous teaching which I have incorporated into my teaching. For example, I might pick a rhythm from a piece that I want to teach and ask them to clap it back. Then I would make up a bass part and get them to improvise using that rhythm in one hand position so that they become familiar with it. Then I might swap parts by asking them to accompany me whilst I improvise. I would then show them the score and when they play the rhythm, they will hopefully notice that it is the same rhythm which helps develop musical awareness and confidence in the pupil.
I have also completed work experience at a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school where I was a volunteer musician aiding the musicians in residence in delivering music to the pupils. This helped me to develop a non-judgemental attitude and empathy which I believe is important for a teacher as the teacher is there to support and help the pupil grow. It also helped me to understand safeguarding issues which is especially important when working with young children. It also helped me to develop my team working skills as we were all working together to support the pupils.

I believe that piano tuition should be fun and enjoyable but also structured to ensure that my pupil has a solid foundation which they can build on.
I do like to be flexible so that I can accomadate my pupils' needs as everyone is unique. I aim to support the pupil in their journey and help them achieve what they want out of playing the piano and music. I see empathy and being non-judgemental as one of my strong points which I use to try and understand where a pupil is coming from and to foster an open relationship where the pupil is able to be honest with me so that I can help them to achieve their potential. I admire curiosity and eagerness and am willing to answer all questions.
I like to also develop the musicianship of the pupil and their music theory. I use games or other creative methods to explain concepts to further reinforce what I have been teaching. I particualrly enjoy helping a pupil gain confidence and watching them grow as a musician and pianist.
As a musician we will have to perform at some point whether that be on stage or in an exam. I like to equip my pupils with performance skills so that they feel ready to perform and are able to manage performance anxiety.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I am delighted to be able to write in the most favourable terms with regard to the pianist and piano teacher Clarence Tang. Clarence was an excellent student at the RNCM where he revealed himself to be modest and hardworking. I would highly recommend him as a teacher who would work well with a pupil on ABRSM grades.
As Clarence's tutor in piano over the four years he spent as a BMus student at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester with regular intensive one-on one tuition contact I have had ample opportunity to come to know his strengths not only as a pianist of great capability but his personality and working practices. He has a quiet character but this goes with an intelligent approach to personal development and problem solving. He is likely to be well attuned to the needs of students seeking similar assistance with their own development. He has always shown consistency and high application in his work and a capacity learn from all aspects of his student experience.
I am sure he will be a person who will take great care and show full responsibility and am happy to recommend him to you with fullest confidence.
