About Chris

I am an enthusiastic and effective teacher of English Language and Literature for all ages between 9 and 18. My main areas of teaching are for students preparing to take 11+ and 13+ admissions exams to grammar and independent schools and for GCSE and A-level English exams. Please see below for some of the feedback.

I have worked in education most of my life, as a teacher and educational manager. My most recent positions were as Programme Director at Oxford Royale and Academic Director at Bellerbys College, London. I was also Academic Head at the British Council in Budapest. I am now semi-retired from the management side of education and mainly involved in teaching and tutoring.

I am a results-focused teacher with success in helping students achieve entry into secondary schools or attain good grades in GCSE and A-level English. The best advice I can give parents and students is to plan ahead and allow enough time for additional support and tutoring to be successful.

I also understand the importance of reliability and trustworthiness in choosing a tutor for children. I have enhanced DBS checked certification (2022) and I have completed training courses as a Level 3 Child Protection and Safeguarding Lead and as an Advanced Level 4 Child Protection Safeguarding Officer.

Please let me know exactly what you need and what your aims are and I will do my very best to help and motivate you!

Latest reviews and feedback:

School Admissions:

'Chis is one of the best tutors we have ever had. My daughter recently went through the process of Sixth Form admissions and Chris was helping her to get prepared for interviews and as a result, she has got offers, including scholarships, which we are very pleased with. If you are looking for a tutor to help your child to be prepared for one the most difficult parts of the school admission process - you do not need to keep searching, you just have found the best one.'

(My son) 'is continuing to exceed expectations, despite the lockdown and current affairs. He has been encouraged by his school to sit a couple of his GCSEs as early as next year. He is in Year 8. I just wanted to let you know that he credits you highly, he still remembers and utilises all that you have taught him. Thank you again.'

GCSE English:

'Today was edexcel's results, and guess what, i got a high 9 in literatureeeeee!!! I was very very very very happyyyyy!! Thank you so much for everything!'

'Chris is an excellent tutor. With his support, hard work and diligence, my dyslexic 16 year old achieved an A grade in GCSE English Language, up from borderline C/D term work. I can highly recommend. Subject: English (GCSE) Outcome: Grade A in GCSE'

Entry exam preparation 11plus:

Successful entry to Christ's Hospital School. 'Chris is helping my son to prepare for his entry exam to a private boarding school. Chris is very knowledgeable and has a lot of advice and experience in getting children prepared. Chris is also helping my son with interview techniques. We are so grateful for all the help. Thank you so much.'

'Thank you for all your support to make a little boy's dream come true.'

11+ Creative Writing

(My son) 'has mentioned on more than one occasion that he now 'gets' what creative writing is about and looks forward to the lessons.'

(My son) 'enjoys your sessions (it’s no mean feat to get a 9 year old boy to enjoy English lessons!)'

'Thank you very much for all your effort and energy put into teaching (my son).
He has made a great progress with you and feels a lot more confident about his abilities- thank you for that.'

Entry Exam Preparation 13+

'Professional and knowledgeable. Chris has been helping my daughter with her English. He has been great, his method of teaching suits my child and she is happy. I do recommend Chris and I rate him highly.'

Homework and feedback:

'Thanks very much for your prompt and professional comments. Very appreciated and impressive'

University Admission:

'Chris was a true professional. He was on time. He came prepared. His extensive knowledge, experience and polite and gentle manner, was a guiding force throughout the session. My daughter lacked confidence and was becoming despondent due to lack of clear input with regards to her personal statement.
Thanks to clear and informed input from Chris, she was able to produce a genuinely powerful personal statement that previously she was grappling to construct. Part of the success of the session was Chris's ability to draw out, and verbalise her skills in such a way that it was a clear demonstration of not only his command of the English language, but his competency in enabling his tutee to realise the range of their potential. This was further guided by the extensive experience he has had within Education and industry, which further elevated the session.'

Find out more about Chris

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been teaching English for 25 years. I started at the British Council in Budapest and moved into school teaching at Bellerbys College in London. After semi-retiring from educational management, I decided to focus on private tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, and the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English Language and Literature. Most of my teaching is focused on specific exams such as GCSEs or 11+. The topics, therefore, are the ones chosen by the examining boards or schools. They are not political, but otherwise very broad-based. The environment and culture are popular topics.
  • Did you have any role models; or teachers that inspired you?

I do have a role model. He was a history teacher. He was student-centred. He was enthusiastic about his subject. He understood the importance of writing concisely and clearly. Sounds easy, doesn't it?
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Prepare the lesson. Understand the student's potential. Be supportive.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once did surprisingly well in a set of school exams. The results were posted on a notice board and i celebrated by running across the tops of the desks and jumping out of the (ground floor) classroom window. Unfortunately, a teacher was walking past at that moment and I landed on his head. He wasn't impressed and he took me off to see the Headmaster.

Work hard; be successful, but avoid overindulgent celebrations.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The challenges around English are often related to the difficulty of expressing ideas. A student may well understand a text and be able to analyse it. However, putting that analysis into a well-structured answer is a challenge, particularly under a time limit, for many students, as it was for me when I was a student.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

English Literature is a passion, particularly poetry. I understand some students work to pass the exams and I don't try to push the 'love of literature' on a student. However, it is rewarding when students with, perhaps, limited interest in poetry appreciate, after studying, a particular poem. Maybe it plants a seed and one day, after school is all over, they will read a poem or two and enjoy them.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions:-P) ?

I have been a prof for 25 years. I am a good prof and I still enjoy it. So if I multiply the length of time by my enthusiasm I get to be a SUPERprof
