About Charlie
I am currently completing a PhD in English at Queen Mary University of London, an inclusive but high-ranking Russell Group university, where I have also taught undergraduate students for several years. With a background in teaching support for secondary schools, journalism, and in university admissions and outreach, I am passionate about teaching English at all levels and for all students regardless of ability or background.
I grew up in Brighton as a shy but engaged child, and benefited from learning at comprehensive schools that placed an emphasis on promoting student wellbeing and the arts. Eventually, I became the first person in my family to achieve A Levels and go to university, reading for a BA (First Class) in English at QMUL, where I graduated with two prizes for the highest grades in my second and final years. I have since won scholarships for an MA (Distinction) and now a PhD in English at QMUL.
Now based in Brighton again, I am available for online tutoring in English for students at school, college, and university, as well as for advice about applying to study English at university.
I have extensive experience in tutoring English, teaching at university, and supporting students in applying to university. Alongside studying and researching English at university, I have worked as a tutor, a teaching assistant, an invigilator, and a coordinator for a tuition programme at a secondary school in east London. I also worked in the Access and Widening Participation Office at UCL, where I ran summer schools, designed open days, and worked with school and college students to help them apply to study English and other arts and humanities subjects at this prestigious institution. During my PhD, which is about literature and education theory, I have taught undergraduates in all year groups and in a range of specialist subjects: literary criticism and literary theory; modernist literature; research skills for dissertation projects; and careers and further study guidance. In 2020, I was awarded a distinction for a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, a course which has helped hone my teaching skills. I have also designed and delivered a range of outreach events at Queen Mary, including a masterclass lecture for A Level students and a reading and writing group for year 10 students at a local school. During all of this work at schools and universities, I have undertaken DBS checks. I have a keen interest in higher education, and have written articles, blogs, and book reviews for the Times Higher Education magazine and have appeared on BBC Radio 4's Today programme to discuss the how to support students going to university.
My approach to learning and teaching is about communicating the joy and value of English (and the arts and humanities more generally) and helping to build the confidence of students in the key skills of literacy, communication, and knowledge of literature and culture in the English language. I am particularly interested in helping students to develop their own ideas and critical interpretations of literary texts (something which is increasingly marginalised in classrooms today) as well as in supporting students to develop their writing skills for essays and creative writing. Ultimately, I am keen to hear how you think I can support you, my approach being to work with you to identify your strengths that can be built on as well as areas where you feel you could do with more improvement.
