About Charlie
I'm a qualified and experienced teacher and a-level examiner who loves helping students get the best results they can!
Since completing my MA and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), I have taught, tutored, and marked exams in a range of subjects from GCSE to undergraduate level. My most recent OFSTED inspection rated my teaching as 'Outstanding in all aspects'.
I’m an experienced teacher of Philosophy, Politics, English, Sociology and Psychology, as well as UCAS personal statements and applications. I have also successfully tutored a number of students on the SAT and ACT entry exams to US universities.
I have also worked as a Visiting Lecturer in English and Creative Writing at the University of Westminster.
In addition to making my teaching fun, clear and enjoyable, I use my insights from working as an A-level examiner for AQA and Edexcel, to help students make sure they meet the precise criteria and get the absolute best results they can. I have examined both Politics and Philosophy to A2 level.
I have a particular specialism in UCAS applications and personal statement writing and interviews, and have an exceptional track record in guiding students to universities at all levels including Oxbridge and US universities. I do short courses of sessions working with students on their applications and personal statements to make sure that they really stand out with university admissions tutors.
I hold a BA(Hons) and MA in Philosophy and have completed research towards a PhD. I’ve also worked as a journalist and a stand-up comedian, and now run live Philosophy events.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Perfect! Charlie Was The Reason For My Huge Improvement In My Grade!!!
Charlie was honestly one of the best teachers I had ever encountered, arguably the best! His sessions are tutored to your needs but he also has a strategy on how to press forward if even you are unsure. Focussed on exam technique, he allows you to tailor your learning to have the ability to smash your exams. Not only is he an examiner, so knows exactly what those who determine your grades are after, but his knowledge on his subjects are also incredibly vast so each tutorial was fascinating and dare I say fun (tutorials are often dull and tiring with most tutors, Charlie's are very different)! His secret essay writing formula was the best gift I got the entire year and he goes that extra mile to mark your work and give feedback too so you can chart your progress. He is worth every penny and more. This is more of an investment into your learning and future success. Cannot speak highly enough of him! I hope you make the best choice and choose him too!

Charlie was a huge inspiration to me during my A-levels and without his enthusiasm, support and ability to make the dullest subjects interesting I can honestly say I would never have made it to university (where I received a first-class degree in International Relations at the University of Sussex). His teaching sparked a now life-long love of learning in me and I will forever remember and be indebted to him for that most precious of gifts.
Throughout the course Charlie supported my learning consistently. I believe he teaches at a high standard always ensuring his students are completely clear on what is being taught. During my course there was a worry I would not pass philosophy however Charlie's encouragement and determination motivated me to want to achieve the best that I could. Charlie is a very inspiring and exceptionally knowledgeable teacher who I feel very lucky to have been taught by.
Charlie further assisted me in my application to university. He spent a great deal of time helping me structure my personal statement as well as proof reading it several times.Mr Saffrey is one of the kind. Not only will he help you to ensure that you get the most out of your education, but he will go above and beyond to ensure that you have constant support throughout your time at school. He helps you achieve the highest grades possible and encourages you to do your best so that you can get into the best schools/ universities that there are to offer. He is truly a remarkable teacher, extremely helpful, and incredibly kind. He offered me invaluable help when I was in sixth form, and would even offer me guidance during the holidays to make sure that my UCAS personal statement was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better, more enthusiastic teacher to help me throughout my secondary school education!
Mr. Saffrey is the first teacher I have had to make me think that maybe he was also human. He is a dedicated and hard working tutor, that really put effort into my success. He makes subjects fun and engaging, even if this through the medium of slightly corny jokes. I attribute my A in Philosophy to him due to a single tutoring lesson, in which we investigated mark schemes in order to maximize my ability to reach all the criteria. I have really valued Mr. Saffrey as a tutor, he has enabled me to reach my full potential.
I had Charles as a one-to-one A Level Philosophy tutor for a year and must say that he helped tremendously, especially as I was not taught the subject for A levels in school. He was able to teach the course syllabus very concisely and effectively, but it was also the way he put the course into a broader conceptual framework of philosophy that really stood out. In doing so, he helped me understand key arguments and concepts more clearly as well as develop a more critical mind, enabling me to be more effective for my independent study. As a result, I was able to achieve a high 'A' grade overall, including a retake for one of my AS level units that was previously a C but improved to an A. This helped me to get into Cambridge to study History. I am still appreciative for Charles' great help.
