About Catrin
I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge, where I read English and graduated with a double First-class degree in 2011. I also have a postgraduate diploma from the University of Oxford in Psychodynamic Practice, achieving a distinction in July 2019. As well as tutoring, I currently work one-to-one with school students on a part-time basis.
I have a solid grounding in my subject, owing to the wide-ranging, chronological structure of the English course at Cambridge; for my degree, I took papers in Shakespeare, Tragedy, Literary Criticism, and Language & Grammar, in addition to the four compulsory period papers, which took us from Chaucer, through the early modern era and the long eighteenth century, to the modern day. I have since worked in publishing, which fostered my interest in modern literary fiction.
I believe passionately in addressing educational disadvantage, and in widening access to the top universities. Having worked seasonally, over a period of three years, for a bespoke English Immersion Schemes programme, I have experience of teaching English to non-native students, aged between 12 and 18, in small groups and individually. As a tutor, I aim to be engaged and engaging, varying my approach according to my students’ specific needs. I endeavour to inspire enthusiasm, to stimulate students’ interest with a variety of exercises, and to help them appreciate the context and nuances of complex texts. I seek to promote students’ confidence and encourage them to achieve academic excellence; I have experience of helping prime and motivate students for forthcoming examinations and/or interviews. I am professional, well-prepared, and my enthusiasm for English is boundless!
