Enthusiastic, friendly and talented tutor

*Due to disability I am unable to travel to the student's house to tutor unless its only a short walk from Northern and Victoria line stations south of the river and a few other train stations including Victoria and Clapham Junction.*

I have experience in tutoring children of a variety of ages from 11+ to A Level, predominantly in History and Maths (but there are others I am also particularly good at). I am a recent graduate of Oxford University with an upper second class (2:1) degree in History and Politics. I'm taking time out this year in order to spend time building experience in tutoring and teaching, mostly because I find it thoroughly rewarding.

My approach to tutoring takes building the confidence of a student incredibly seriously. My own battle at Oxford to keep up with the demands of a very rigorous study program whilst suffering from a severe three year long flare of Crohn's Disease has shown me what loss of academic confidence due to illness can do to a good student. The performance of students is more closely linked to the confidence to make - and learn from - mistakes than it is even to natural ability. Nurturing the self-confidence of students and putting their anxieties to bed are just as important as the learning itself, because without confidence learning becomes impossible.

I also tend to tailor approaches to the student for best results, and as such am able to adopt a variety of teaching techniques. I can offer relaxed and friendly sessions for students whose anxiety interferes with their progress, encouragement and assistance for students whose self-confidence is a problem, my knowledge and explanatory power for students who simply aren't taught well enough in school, and heavily structured sessions for students for whom the lack of actual willpower prevents them from achieving their potential. Having suffered myself from all these learning predicaments at one time or another, its of personal interest to me that your potential student takes away something extremely valuable from my tutoring sessions.

I have full documentation, and a detailed education history on my profile. I went to Westminster School where I earned 10 GCSE's at A* and did three A Levels (History A*, Maths A and Religious Studies A) including one AS Level (Critical Thinking A) before going on to Oxford University to study History and Politics, achieving a 66 average with a high of 72 in a module on the history of the early modern world. I like the idea of tutoring because encouraging somebody to realise their potential, or even merely realise an academic objective, is something I love doing.

Wonderful teacher: Great Subject Knowledge

Cameron tutored me for my A Level history and I really couldn't have achieved what I did without him as I was really struggling and thought it would affect my uni chances if I didn't get help. He worked with me on subject knowledge, how to answer questions and how to approach sources, and all these things were totally invaluable when it came to my final exam and also work at university. He definitely helped me boost my grade, and was a really nice and professional tutor.

Outstanding Tutor, Intelligent & Patient

Cameron assisted me in preparing for my History A Level exam over the course of two months. He was not just able to show me how to improve the quality of my answers, but actually created an environment where I could work that out on my own. His knowledge of the periods I was studying was extensive and often provided me with additional perspectives that my schoolteachers did not cover. He was very patient and understanding when I struggled to improve my essay style, and overall a pleasure to be tutored by.

Maths tutor GCSE

Cameron is a great tutor. He always arrives prepared for the session with lots of work for me to do. When I struggle to understand a difficult topic, he is great at explaining it to me and has some great tips to help remember how to work out different types of question. I would highly recommend him.

Successful outcomes under difficult conditions

Cameron provided 1:1 tuition for our student in both English and Maths. On the high end of the autistic spectrum, this student was extremely challenging, with an almost complete lack of empathy and resulting negative behaviour. Cameron delivered in a calm and confident manner, enabling the student to revise for his exams in a structured and contained way.
Subject:
English Language
Outcome:
The student was able to sit his GCSE exams confidently and calmly, in the knowledge that he had revised successfully. We predict good results for him.
