About Callum

My experience lies in assisting aspiring music producers with personal projects, as well University & A-level students with course work, dissertations and exams. I specialise in the production of Electronic Music (notably dance music) & am available to teach a wide range of technical abilities.

Qualifications - I graduated with a 1st in Electronic Music Production at the Academy of Contemporary Music (BA). I also received the `Outstanding Producer Award` for having the highest overall mark that year.

Industry Experience: Recorded and produced a number of Electronic artists. I also work as a mix/mastering engineer part time. References available upon request.

Academic Experience: For the past 10 years I've worked as private tutor & lecturer. I'm also the chief examiner for the "RSL Awards" music production course.

I have a car so travelling can be arranged, although I often encourage students to come to my studio in Hoxton - complete with industry standard equipment. Zoom lessons also available.

Find out more about Callum

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I began playing the guitar, piano and tuba from a young age. I quickly got into music production at school and went onto University to study. Since then I've worked in multiple studios as a producer and mix engineer.

I'd probably say my favourite instrument is an analogue synth - perhaps my 1980's Korg Mono/Poly!
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

My music taste is reallllly varied, from modern experimental dance music to 1970's rock. If i had to pick one artist, I'd probably say Thom Yorke....
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I guess the ideal course would meet the students' needs whilst challenging them appropriately. Potentially creating tracks and discussing techniques as we go, or perhaps a more structured academic route. Totally up to them!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

    The DAW for sure.
  • What are your keys to success?

Being passionate is key. I'm constantly listening, creating and working on music. I love it.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I'll give you more than 3!
Jon Hopkins. LCY. Pearson Sound. Novelist. Knucks. John Lennon. Kelly Lee Owens. Sparklehorse. Lady Wray. Danger Mouse. Nils Frahm. William Basinski. Floating Points. Theo Parrish. Kerri Chandler. Thom Yorke. Roger Water (Pink Floyd). Ella Fitzgerald. The Streets.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I remember my lecturer at University blasting out the tune "Open Eye Signal" by Jon Hopkins. He played it crazy loud and I remember being so unsure of what I thought of it. Anyway, needless to say I played it on loop for weeks after that and it's by far one of my favourite tunes of all time.

I guess the lesson from that is that music isn't always instant. And when something is so fresh, it can take a little time for you to accept it.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I'm always on hand to help - day and night you'll find me at my studio ! Cheers
