About Callum

Final year PhD Student in Chemistry at University of York.

I have over 2000 hours experience privately tutoring students in chemitsry. Including A-Level chemistry students whom I've helped achieve their individual targets on difficult advanced concepts for exams, coursework etc. As well as this I have also tutored both foundation level and higher GCSE students, helping them achieve their grade 4 or higher targets respectively. I am a qualified graduate teaching assistant at the University of York which holds an Athena Swan gold award for teaching so am trained to a high standard in teaching. This role has also given me plenty of experience in teaching difficult concepts at a university level. On top of this I also have experience of tutoring 1st 2nd and 3rd year chemistry students on a variety of topics. I prefer to hold 1 to 1 tutoring sessions to ensure the student has the best experience and can ask questions freely to ensure a good understanding. I can however hold group sessions for students if they would like to have lessons together, these prices can be negotiated based off how many students are attending etc. I have a real passion for teaching and will put in maximum effort to ensure the student succeeds. As I have achieved a first class masters degree in chemistry and am currently studying for my PhD; I am well equipped to help with any issues as I have a good understanding of all fundamental chemistry concepts as well as a good understanding of similar subject knowledge. I also offer help with proofreading assignments (at a reduced rate from my hourly rate depending on the length of the assignment and level).

University :
First Class Masters Degree (MCHEM) from The Manchester Metropolitan University achieving above an 80% average across all year.

Qualified Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) training with the University of York (UoY)

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Chemistry when I was around 15 thanks to a very passionate teacher who made the topic interesting and fun to learn. I started private tutoring during the first lockdown in the UK during COVID (around March 2020) although had tutored classmates and family for free before this.

  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love to talk about all aspects of chemistry, whether it’s formal and strict following an exam specification for a specific qualification or if you just have a general interest in a certain area. I’m happy to chat about anything as it all fascinates me. If you see something interesting and want to know how it works (at least the chemistry of it) then drop me a message.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a couple of teachers when I was 15-18 that really inspired my interest in chemistry but have had lots of role models since then going through university that I’ve been lucky to work with and have helped me grow as a chemist and a teacher.

  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think the main quality a tutor needs is patience. Not everybody’s brain works the same way as yours. Just because I find something easy doesn’t mean everyone does. I’m prepared to explain something as many different ways as it takes for someone to understand something. I often take topics all the way back to basic principles you’ll learn when you’re 12+ if needed and build people up to the level they desire.

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Something I’ll always remember is one of my university lecturers saying a quote from Richard Feynman (one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics): “I think I can safely say that nobody really understands quantum mechanics”. As he developed quantum mechanics but didn’t understand it himself it made me feel a lot better about not understanding it myself.

  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I didn’t do very well in my A-Level exams which, are pre-university exams in England, for what I needed as my university offered anyways. I didn’t actually get into my first choice of university and was told “no chemistry course will take you with those grades”. No only did I get into a chemistry course but graduated with a first-class masters degree and am now close to completing my PhD in chemistry.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I really enjoy teaching. Thanks to my teachers I was inspired to keep pursuing chemistry and I now have that opportunity to inspire and help other learn chemistry to achieve their goals. It really feels like I am able to give back as I know what it’s like to not understand the topics.

  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is that I truly care. I want to see all my students do well and achieve their individual goals. I find it so rewarding to help someone finally understand something.
