About Benedict

Gifted, imaginative and engaging tutor

*NB (26/02/2014): I am currently in full-time employment, and have little scope, personally, for providing any tuition. I do have a lot of good teaching contacts, however, and would be happy to help point you in the right direction if you would still like to message me.

Since I first discovered my flair for it four years ago, teaching and tutoring has had me completely hooked. Literature has been my lifelong passion, and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing that spark of excitement take hold in someone else; particularly in cases where there was a prior lack of confidence or disconnect. Learning is an extraordinarily personal thing. I fervently believe that every student has the innate capacity, and fundamental right, to fully engage with and enjoy their education, and it is purely a question of finding a teaching style that works for them. The fact that it is possible to grant each learner the unique approach and pace they deserve is what, for me, distinguishes tutoring as the optimal context for teaching, and makes it such a rewarding and empowering thing to be involved with. For those that are already achieving well in English, I can help them refine their approach, broaden their understanding and develop strategies for even greater success. I am available to teach English up to undergraduate level - my particular areas of specialty being creative writing, poetry and Shakespeare – Sociology to A Level, and History to GCSE.

Having lived and taught in many different countries – including England, Sri Lanka, China and Japan – I have been exposed to a very broad spectrum of educational environments and challenges, and have routinely had to tailor my approach in accordance with a diverse range of demands, goals and priorities. I have a great deal of experience supporting learners for whom English is not a first language, and have often been blown away by what exceptional students of literature they have proven to be.

Alongside teaching and tutoring, I run a charity that operates in northern Sri Lanka providing aid and support to schools and teachers in civil war-affected Tamil communities. I can speak Japanese, Spanish and Italian to varying degrees of competency, and in my spare time – when I’ve not got a pen in my hand or my head stuck in a book – I enjoy running and boxing.

Inspiring, patient and very knowledgeable!

Written by Kartika De S
Benedict taught a six-week A-Level literature module for our sixth-form students back in March this year, and really brought the subject alive for them like never before. From the start he had a great relationship with the class, and managed to get even some quite difficult students to engage well. The class worked very hard for him, and were always looking forward to his lessons! Some of the material he covered was more challenging than what the students were used to, certainly his lessons on Hamlet and poetic metre, but he was sensitive to the fact that the students were not native English speakers and I was very impressed with how careful he was to check that all of the students had properly understood at each point. Benedict was always very professional and courteous around the school, but also a very animated and enthusiastic teacher. I will always remember his very dramatic lesson on The Charge of the Light Brigade! Of course, I would wholeheartedly recommend Benedict as a tutor. He will bring life to the subject and really get the most out of your students.

We are still waiting for our results from August. However, following Benedict's classes, many of the students' essay marks had increased by at least one grade boundary.

Wonderful tutor.

Ben is an extremely capable teacher with a true passion for language. I was fortunate enough to be taught Business English by him for two years, and found him to be a very professional and inspirational tutor. His lessons had a really positive effect on my confidence and my spoken English. He was always punctual, polite and patient, and the lessons were always fascinating and well prepared. I recommend him highly.

Ben's English lessons helped me a lot at work, and really transformed my speaking ability.

Benedict is an excellent and enthusiastic teacher. He can easily adapt to different levels and unlock the difficulties due to communication (being shy, introvert etc..).
He quickly understands your needs and focuses on them through informatic tools, exercices and "games".
Unfortunately we didn't have so many sessions due to a lot of trips back and forth (on my side). But thanks to him i could targeted my level and feel comfortable with my english. Since the first mee
