About Ben
I gained my CELTA qualification in 2019 (Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Since then, I have also taken courses in Teaching English Online and How to Teach IELTS.
In 2019, I taught summer classes at International House and Oxford Intensive School of English (OISE). I also started tutoring freelance 1:1 in that year. In 2020 and 2021, I worked as an Assistant Professor on an online pre-sessional course in English for Academic Purposes at Heriot-Watt University. I did a similar job at Coventry University in 2022.
I have a first class BA in English language and literature from the University of Oxford, a distinction-level MPhil in criticism and culture from the English department at Cambridge, and a PhD in art history from the Open University. I also work as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader, often with writers for whom English is a foreign language.

I will ask you about your learning needs so I can plan and prepare lessons to suit you.
Because of my background, I am particularly good at teaching writing skills and English for academic purposes but I will be happy to focus on whatever you want to learn.
I particularly enjoy communicative and task-based teaching, where you learn by speaking and listening, reading and writing about things that are important to you, and you practice for real-life activities using English. I can help you gain the vocabulary, grammar, and skills you need for all this.
I teach adults (age 18 and above).

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Ben and I completed our CELTA course together. I observed him teach on a regular basis and watched the progression he made during the course time. He planned lessons well, taking into consideration the needs of the learners and feedback from previous observations in order to develop his teaching. He was also supportive to others on the course and was a great team member to work with.
Ben Pritchett recently completed a Cambridge CELTA course at IH Bristol and I was one of the course tutors. During the course, Ben worked hard to learn and polish a number of teaching techniques including eliciting, concept checking and drilling. He planned lessons in great detail and was able to teach new language to students at two different levels.
I was one of the tutors on the March 2019 CELTA course , on which Ben was a trainee. During the course, Ben was always diligent with his preparation of lessons and worked hard to change his teaching style to include more student interaction. Particular strengths included: drilling, student communication and use of classroom technology.
Benjamin plans his lessons in detail and analyses his target language in order to teach it effectively. His strengths included redirecting questions to other students, use of visual and technical aids and getting students speaking early on in the lesson. He includes drilling and help with pronunciation in his lessons as well as pairwork to increase student talking time and personalisation.
