About Antonios

UCL 1st Year Medical Student

My name is Antonis Armonis and I am from Greece, Athens. I graduated high school in Greece with the IB diploma as my qualification. I currently study undergraduate medicine at UCL and live in London.

After my admission to UCL, I have been asked for advice on how to succeed in the IB and get into medical school by younger pupils. Of course, knowing how stressful and demanding the process is for a young student I gave my advice freely and wholeheartedly. I then realised that I am more than enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring, especially in fields that interest me, namely subjects such as Biology and Chemistry. I am also very willing to support medical school applicants with my knowledge and experience. The admission process was a stressful period, during which I needed to learn new skills and adapt to a competitive environment. Having received a lot of help myself, I now consider it my obligation to contribute in helping students who need guidance in meeting the demands of getting into medical school. Specifically, students that aspire to study medicine, not only have to succeed academically, but also take UKCAT or BMAT exams, submit a near-perfect personal statement and go through an interview competing with hundreds of applicants. Having gone through and succeeded in this pathway rather recently, I feel confident that I can advice students in these aspects.

Apart from the academics I consider myself capable in terms of communication skills. As a student I undertook various volunteering opportunities, which where mainly in a medical environment, where I had to interact with patients and their families. As part of my medical interview preparation I learned how to incorporate both verbal and non verbal tools to communicate confidence for myself and my knowledge. Lastly, one of the reasons I adore the UCL medical school curriculum is the patient contact from the first year. This year I participated in GP and community placements, where I had the opportunity to meet and communicate with patients, which a challenging and stimulating procedure.

Last but not least, I personally consider organisation and discipline key virtues in both teaching and learning. My experiences with sports from a young age have enhanced my sense of working consistently and in an organised manner to achieve my goals. I hope to persuade young students of the importance of this virtue.

Biology inspirer

Written by Ezer M
Antonios was my tutor for Biology SL module during my IB degree. Biology was a module in which I never did well, and my excuse to that was that “I am not good in memorizing”. In IB1 I recognized that I would get a 5 in the final exams if I did not get help, since many gaps had already accumulated from the IB1 syllabus. This was when I started tutorials with Antonios, to whom I owe a solid 7/7 in my final exam. In the course of eight months (October-May), not only did we cover in depth the syllabus of a two years course, but I also cultivated a passion for Biology, which I now combine with my engineering studies. To do so, he started by emphasising the fact that Biology does not require memorization, but a very good understanding of natural processes. Using numerous examples and videos, through which I learn better, and by going step-by-step through each process, Antonios prepared me so well, that I was so confident that I would score a 7/7 before entering the exam room. An example of a process that I had problem to learn is that of was that of the blood flow in the body. Antonios, pursuing his Medicine degree, helped me understand it perfectly, being able to answer all the “why’s” which sometimes were even absent from the book that I studied. He was punctual, always on time, precise and confident in what he taught, dedicated to my success and very enthusiastic for the module he taught me.

Received 7/7 and got inspired to combine biology with engineering (degree I am pursuing).

Tutor reference

Antonios was my tutor for the module of Biology during my Panhellenic Exams. Biology was a module, which required deeply understanding and memorizing in detail fundamental principles. Although, I was very good at learning these principles by heart, I had difficulty in understanding and critically assessing the core concepts.

Biology
Outcome:
As a result, I started tutorials with Antonios, who convinced me that Biology was all about understanding and critically combining knowledge. He explained to me that Biology principles are like "
