English/Modern Greek Language Tutor

I am holder of a BA in English and Greek Language and Literature (University of Athens, Greece) and an MA degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (University of Reading, UK). With over 24 years of experience in teaching various courses related to the English language, but beyond it as well, I believe my qualifications will match your requirements. I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of educational settings which has helped me to adapt to new situations and faculty demands. My willingness to expand my EFL teaching to relevant fields and my early interest in ESP and EAP and in particular Business and Technical English has provided me with a fulfilling career both at the Technological Education Institute of Piraeus and the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education (ASPAITE) in Greece. On the other hand, my love for ESP and my inquisitive spirit has led me to attend a vocational training program, accompanied by an accreditation exam procedure, where I was awarded a certificate as a trainer for adults, a required teaching qualification to be eligible for public funded non-formal education programs, on ‘Development of Lifelong Learning’. This certification has helped me broaden my horizons and has provided me with the opportunity to enrich my knowledge in disciplines other than EFL teaching such as ESP teaching (English Banking, English Logistics, Medical English, Hotel and Catering English, English for Music Technology, English Posting Terminology, English for Computing). I am also involved in teaching Greek as a second language to immigrants, employed by the General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning which, in the context of policies for the prevention of social exclusion, plans and implements programs for the teaching of Greek as a second language to immigrants. This position gave me the opportunity to work successfully with students from a range of cultural backgrounds as well as the ability to adapt teaching materials to varying levels of linguistic competence. I treasure these programs for having ensured me an interdisciplinary teacher profile. Finally, I have taught EAP (English Writing I – Essay Writing, Writing Minutes and Summaries, Writing ppt slides, writing professional emails and letters, Research Paper Writing, Presentation and Translation skills, Negotiation Activities) at the Greek National School for Public Administration and Local Government, an educational unit which feeds administration staffers with highly skilled and modern education and famous for its high standards of teaching. Probably the most valuable thing I’ve learned from this position is the importance of using technology as an integral part of literacy instruction. Aimed at making my lessons more attractive and interesting, I have made use of the Internet, interactive materials and projectors in class. I find computers to be an important tool for modern teaching.
My passion for English has also led me in quest of teaching positions abroad. I have worked as a Pre-Sessional Tutor at the University of Southampton (UK) for three summers. This post was another landmark in my EAP teaching career. My field of teaching included English Writing and Reading to future Master’s students, something that gave me insight into the academic requirements of students in tertiary education. The principal aims were to develop students’ confidence, fluency and accuracy in the four skills and to develop their communication skills, study skills and problem solving/analytical abilities to function effectively and efficiently at a postgraduate level. Furthermore, I was given the chance to work with students with a range of cultural backgrounds and different language abilities, mostly from the Middle East and the Far East.
My colleagues, but mostly my students, have given me credit for creating constructive changes in students’ academic life by sharing with them my enthusiasm for teaching, proving myself sociable, team-spirited and devoted to my profession. My teaching experience has given me the opportunity to demonstrate my organizational skills as well, that is, being a member of the teaching staff, giving my feedback in meetings, organizing exams, keeping clear records of students’ progress and attending teacher-supervisor meetings to ensure the smooth running of classes.
