Oxbridge graduate and Head of History at top school in the country for progress

About Andrew
I am a Cambridge graduate, and have spent ten years working at two outstanding schools. I currently Head of History at a school ranked first in the country for pupil progress (2022), and have been Head of Politics in the past. My last class of A-level students all achieved an A or A* grade (80% A*). In our 2022 cohort at our non-selective, inner-city school, 89% of of pupils taking history achieved a grade 8 or 9.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the admissions office of St John’s College, Cambridge, providing guidance and support for students applying to top universities.
As a teacher and tutor, I believe firmly in high standards. I am excited by history, politics, and all things related to people and ideas, including languages, philosophy, and literature. My teaching success comes through sharing my enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, a wide range of academic interests. My lessons are informed by thorough analysis of the course being studied, and careful diagnosis of a student’s individual needs.

Recommendations

Andrew is an outstanding teacher whom we are very sad to lose. He is only leaving to pursue his MA studies and we would employ him again with hesitation. He has delivered superb results for whole cohorts and worked very well in one-on-one interventions. He goes above and beyond for his students and is a model professional who commits to his employment in way that is unrivalled in the school. I would have no hesitation in recommending Andrew to tutor students at any level of their education - he has proven himself with students from Year 7 to Year 13. He has the ability to challenge and motivate students in a way that gets the very best out of even the most disengaged young people. Andrew has excelled most recently as a History and Politics teacher in the school, leading the curriculum at GCSE and A level. In the past Andrew has led classes for a variety of humanities subjects and has also delivered excellent French tutoring.
