About Andrew

Successful, fully-qualified teacher, and Oxbridge graduate

I am a Cambridge graduate and qualified teacher. 83% of my most recent GCSE students achieved A or A* grades at a non-selective school, and 70% the year before. In 2017, 100% of my History A-Level students gained grades between C and A*. My students have won places to study History or Politics at universities such as LSE, Durham, Warwick, and Oxford. I have spent five years working at an outstanding state secondary school, ranked fifth in the country for pupil progress. I have taught at KS3, GCSE, and A Level. Consistently awarded the highest two grades in lesson observations, I am proud of having helped students achieve excellent results. I have spent many hours tutoring students to improve exam performance, and to stretch those hoping to apply for top universities.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the admissions office of St John’s College, Cambridge, providing guidance and support for students applying to top universities.

As a teacher and tutor, I believe firmly in high standards. I am excited by history, politics, and all things related to people and ideas, including languages, philosophy, and literature. My teaching success comes through sharing my enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, a wide range of academic interests. My lessons are informed by thorough analysis of the course being studied, and careful diagnosis of a student’s individual needs.

I am currently studying for an MA in Medieval History at King’s College London, possibly with a view to undertaking a PhD. I achieved a PGCE from Canterbury Christ Church University through the School Direct programme. Before this, I studied History at the University of Cambridge. I have A grades at A Level in History, French, Physics, and Chemistry.

When not teaching, I enjoy running, reading, and listening to electronic music.

Andrew Lomas - Outstanding teacher and tutor (History, Politics and French)

Written by Richard T
Andrew is an outstanding teacher whom we are very sad to lose. He is only leaving to pursue his MA studies and we would employ him again with hesitation. He has delivered superb results for whole cohorts and worked very well in one-on-one interventions. He goes above and beyond for his students and is a model professional who commits to his employment in way that is unrivalled in the school. I would have no hesitation in recommending Andrew to tutor students at any level of their education - he has proven himself with students from Year 7 to Year 13. He has the ability to challenge and motivate students in a way that gets the very best out of even the most disengaged young people. Andrew has excelled most recently as a History and Politics teacher in the school, leading the curriculum at GCSE and A level. In the past Andrew has led classes for a variety of humanities subjects and has also delivered excellent French tutoring.
Andrew achieved the schools best-ever History GCSE results with 95% of students achieving A*-C and 70% achieving A*-A grade. Every student met or exceeded their highly aspirational target grades in hi
