"Chemistry was never my daughters favourite subject at A level, and one which she struggled with finding enthusiasm for until Andrew ignited her passion which had gone since GCSE days. The School estimated that after a C in her Mocks the most we could hope for was a B. With Andrews help she smashed a High A Grade. I am sure if you chose Andrew you will achieve your full potential as his skill and support is fantastic"

I am one of this sites original tutors and enjoyed being present for the launch of the company! I am also a teacher at Londons leading independent 6th form college. The college only takes on teachers of an exceptional standard with a great emphasis on the demands of the specification and exam technique. I am pleased to say that my teaching has been deemed outstandin by a recent ISI inspection.

I have been tutoring for 10 years both in person and online using an interactive white board. At the college I have taken an active lead in the delivery of online virtual lessons, training staff and student alike.

The families I have worked these past years has varied greatly, from Hollywood actors and political leaders to children living in inner-city council estates. Whilst the majority of my students are London based I regularly tutor clients as far flung as America, Italy, India, China and Korea. I use the latest user friendly educational whiteboards that have proved to be very effective. Lessons can be recored and played back by the student at any time.

I graduated from the University of Manchester as a Master of Chemistry in 2010. Despite numerous publications of my research work in prominent science journals, above all, I consider myself to be very much a people person. Rather than spending my career in the lab with glass wear as my only friends I made the decision 10 years ago (after a brief 2 year stint in the City) to tutor Chemistry full time and am truly loving it. Within that time I have enjoyed an average 3 grade improvement (eg. D to A) from all of my former students. This ability to boost grades and confidence has been reinforced by my time as an official marker of IGCSE and A-level papers. I understand exactly what is required from a student and how to make the examiners job an easy one!

Whilst at university I was active in the universities outreach programme, promoting science to school children in the greater Manchester area as, unfortunately, this is a subject frequently considered too challenging for some or just simply un-enjoyable.

Having initially struggled with Chemistry myself, I can empathise with a students frustrations. I approach all lessons with energy and passion and believe I can turn around a student’s opinion on Chemistry by humanising the subject and drawing parallels to what the student study’s in the class room to what they experience in everyday life.

Once a student realises the huge relevance Chemistry has, understanding the abstract concepts and calculations becomes easy and even fun! Regardless of a students enthusiasm, I strive to instil a thorough understanding of all areas of the subject enabling them to obtain good results and a sense of achievement through their own skill and ability. It is such a rewarding feeling telling the parents of a student that their son/daughter no longer requires private tuition. It sounds strange to say but I strive to make myself redundant!

Whilst not teaching I design and lead science based adventure tours around Iceland. The science behind its awe-inspiring landscapes has provided the perfect educational resource to rouse an interest from my home tuition students. Whilst on tour I have had the honour of meeting the president of Iceland, NASA scientists and even Barrack Obamas chief science advisor Harvard physicist John P. Holdren.

I am the co-founder and director of the UK's largest free rock music festival, the Marshall amps Hanwell Hootie! This year we enjoyed our largest festival to date with 100 bands spread across 19 venues and 30,000 attendees leading to extensive coverage on BBC6 music, NME , Timehout and the Evening Standard. I am also a keen sportsman, playing tennis and football twice weekly.

I will assess areas of the students weakness and create a plan of action to takle these learning blocks head on. I will create a despoke plan depending on the students needs and goals.

I am unashamemly results driven and put allot of emphasis on exam technique. However the difference with my lessons is I aim to make the study of chemistry fun alongside delivering results.

Lessons are typically 1 hour and delivered online using the best and most user friendly software.

I have been teaching and tutoring for 10 years. I have amassed over 5000 individual tutoring hours.

I am also a teacher at Londons leading college (since 2015). I therefore have access to a huge range of resources covering all exam boards.

I hold a bachelor of Science and a master of Chemistry degree from the University of Manchester. My research work has been published and cited.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I think it must have been at A-Level where I truly started to develop my interest in chemistry. Everything seemed to be linked together in a vast spider’s web of laws and concepts. The deeper you studied, say the atom, the more you understood these natural laws yet at the same time the more mysterious and wonderful they became. There seemed to be a moment when everything just clicked into place and things that were once very scary looking became manageable and fascinating. The nature of orbitals, shapes of molecules, symmetry, and mechanisms, they were all linked! I started to tutor back in 2013. I had a high paid job in the city of London but I really wasn’t happy. I started to tutor the daughter of a family friend on weekends and remember feeling so energised during and after the lesson. I really enjoyed the interaction with the student and knew I was helping her. From then on, I never really looked back.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Chemistry is a game that electrons play. It is such a vital subject that has a bit of everything. Gas laws and energetics from physics, organic mechanisms from biology but what I love about chemistry is that it’s an experimental science that involves a lot of messing around and being inquisitive. It is so vital for pretty much any science-based subject you can study at university. From neuroscience to astrophysics, you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a hefty amount of chemistry to get your teeth into. I really enjoy teaching the topics that can be fun to work out but at the same time become mysterious and fascinating the more you study them. NMR is one of these topics. Finding the right molecule for a complex NMR spectrum is so logical with little ‘tricks of the trade’ that it feels like it should be featured next to a sudoku puzzle in the morning daily newspaper. However, the way the magnetic fields and radio waves interact to create this spectrum are mind boggling. Organic mechanisms is another example. Deducing where the curly arrows go and who is the nucleophile feels like a little game, but what you are actually doing is mapping out how life works on an atomic scale! Equilibria is another fun one as it is rather abstract, but I feel you can draw interesting parallels to the way society shifts according to external change just like a chemical system. Students always find this interesting to ponder on.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my A-level teacher. I was on a D grade in my first year of A-levels and my confidence was very low. I was even doubting if I was ‘right’ for university. In our second year a new teacher burst onto the scene. He was so enthusiastic about the subject and was able to break down what I thought were impossibly hard concepts into very easy manageable chunks. He was full of anecdotes and stories about the role chemistry had played in his career and how it impacts us all daily. He really inspired me and it struck me how important this subject was for humanity as a whole (very dramatic I know). Thanks to him I went on to study chemistry at university and also did a masters degree. The real icing on the cake was that he turned up to my graduation ceremony. He gifted me a lovely fountain pen which I still use to this day.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A tutor must be 3 things in one. A teacher to impart the knowledge, a mentor to help the student grow and a coach to provide guidance which helps the student reach their full potential. It goes without saying that knowing the subject like the back of your hand is essential. However, the top tutors need to possess the skill of understanding the unique learning style of each student. A tutor must put themselves in the shoes of their students and understand their mind set. I really didn’t like chemistry to begin with and had many gaps in my knowledge. Empathy is key with tutoring! In a classroom environment some teachers simply give up on students and deem them to be stupid if they can’t grasp something. A tutor needs to be creative and patient in finding the key to unlock the students leaning blocks. A good chemistry tutor will always find solutions! (Pun intended)
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

If you look back on the history of chemistry most of the best discoveries were complete accidents caused by messing around in a lab! I was doing just that during my master’s degree at Manchester University (UK). I turned up to my lab one Tuesday morning, whacked on the radio and turned it up as Led Zeppelin blasted out. I then just started mixing different chromium based compounds together, heating them up, filtering and re-crystallising. To my amazement I produced these beautiful emerald green crystals the size of a £2 coin! I sent them off for further analysis using X-ray diffraction….3 days later the results came back and boom! I had discovered a brand new molecule, never produced or seen before in the world. This led to publications and recognition and numerous citations from universities from LA to Tokyo! Just type my name into google scholar and you can check it out!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The difficulty in chemistry is that some students find is so abstract and scary looking (some of the redox equations are pretty scary looking to the untrained eye!) that they give up before they attempt to understand it. I completely understand how they feel! I initially struggled my chemistry myself. In my teaching I always try and bring chemistry to life. I use as many real-life analogies as I can. Electrons occupying orbitals behave just like commuters on a train for example. Acronyms, symbols and even rhymes are excellent tools in breaking down complex ideas into manageable easy to remember chunks. I find that chemistry is presented as really dry, dull and grey by the way it is taught by some teachers in allot of schools. Many of students fail to see what relevance it has to them in their life and don’t see the benefit of studying it. I am determined to prove just how colourful, interesting, playful, and integral chemistry truly is!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Alongside teaching, I am passionate about music and travel. I am the founder and creative director of the UK’s largest free rock music festival. I started the festival back in 2013 in just 3 small pubs and we have now grown to 19 venues, over 100 bands and 30,000+ guests. I am passionate about young and emerging artists and bands given a platform to play (and being paid what they deserve to do so). A lot of my students who are in bands have played the youth stage of my festival and the feedback is always excellent. I have been featured on BBC radio, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, London Live News, Talk radio and various local newspapers. Whilst not teaching (during the summer months) I design and lead science based adventure tours around Iceland. I lead groups of up to 50, mainly American, students around this insanely beautiful and dangerous volcanic island. We climb mountains, watch Whales , hunt Northern lights and Kayak in glacial lagoons! The science behind its awe-inspiring landscapes has provided the perfect educational resource to rouse an interest from my students. Whilst on tour I have had the honour of meeting the president of Iceland, NASA scientists and even Barrack Obamas chief science advisor Harvard physicist John P. Holdren.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a super prof is my dedication to my students, the pride I have in my teaching and of course the results I have achieved with literally hundreds of students over the years. As well as instilling enthusiasm for the subject I am unashamedly results driven. I have developed a whole array or acronyms and symbols that have proven to work time and time again. These are designed to be ‘exam panic proof’. (CMRR, DSF, PANCAKE, BEHE, VIADD, Bendo, Mexo…. to list but a few, it’s not gibberish I promise). I pride myself on a record of improving students grade on average by at least 3 levels (eg D-A for A-level or L6-Level 9 GCSE ). I was tutoring online many years before the pandemic and was instrumental on leading seminars on how to deliver high quality online lessons to 100 + teachers at my school (Londons leading independent school) I have taught over 5000 hours of high-quality chemistry lessons online using the most user-friendly and innovative white board software.
