About Drew
I'm an academic, writer, composer and keen educator with 20 years+ of tutoring experience.
I cover all the syllabuses - AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, CIE... I'm particularly expert on A levels and Shakespeare, but everything from Chaucer to contemporary literature is grist to my mill. If you're a bit stumped by any particular text, we can focus on it and make it one of your strengths.
At A Level, you need to know about context, critics, essay structure and - most often neglected - how to show your individual appreciation of a writer’s literary or dramatic technique. Together we can increase your confidence in all these areas, gain deeper insights, and help you clarify your own arguments and articulate your ideas.
At I/GCSE and in school entrance exams, it’s all about showing comprehension, having the vocabulary to do so, and writing with clarity and impact.
I have also taken students through exams independently (for example if you have left school, but want to retake the English Literature A-level to get that A* grade. Should you be considering applying to study Literature at Oxford or Cambridge, I can show you how to approach analysing 'unseens' in the ELATs.
If you wish to share the cost of tuition with another student or students you know by scheduling a group class, that's possible, just drop me a line. Should you come to my house for tuition, the cost is the same as online.
If anything in the above speaks to your needs, please get in touch!

I look forward to hearing from you! - Andrew
(PS, you may notice from my qualifications that I only got an 'A' at A level in English - this was before A*s were introduced to combat grade inflation!)

Deepen your comprehension of English language and your insights into Literary texts and the contexts in which they were written. Strengthen your arguments, enhance the impact of your essays, sentence structure and phrasing. English Literature is to be ENJOYED - in exams it helps to show that YOU enjoy it, as we will in our lessons. Even Shakespearean tragedy has comedy in the mix (less in 'Macbeth', admittedly, though the Porter's part contains the original of all those 'Knock knock' jokes).

All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the students of Drew.
Perfect! Sam was really impressed and would love to continue with Drew for the remainder of his GCSE year
Perfect! A very engaging 30 min trial lesson. Drew has great knowledge on An Inspector Calls with some interesting topics raised. A war poem was also discussed, which Drew read in a really animated engaging way. There was just the right amount of two way conversation to provide excellent engagement for both parties. We hope to do many more lessons!
Perfect! Very good tutor! His approach has always been personalised and professional. We hope to continue our lessons of English Literature and reach results in knowledge and exam.
Perfect! Very very excellent English tutor!
Perfect! My daughter has had a great time in Drew's classes and looks forward to continuing to learn and progress with Drew.
Perfect! Drew tutored my daughter during her English Literature A Level. He gave her confidence and provided insights which helped her achieve the grade she needed to get to University.
Perfect! Drew taught my son GCSE English Language and English and Literature and we are really glad we found him.
He is clearly super knowledgeable of his subject and engages it in a way that brings it to life and keeps the students interested.
He is reliable and was always flexible to make sure Wilfred had the help he needed, especially in the crucial, pre-exam period. My son always said he enjoyed the lessons.
We couldn’t recommend him enough. I would say he raised my son’s grade at least one level if not more.Perfect! Drew is a first class tutor. He is Knowledgeable , patient and enthusiastic. Highly recommended.
Perfect! Drew is an expert in his field. He is extremely passionate about the subject and has a very engaging style. Brilliant tutor!
Perfect! Drew is an excellent tutor who knows how to encourage a student to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Have only had two lessons so will come back to update. He is also an interesting person with a wealth of knowledge about English Literature.
- Drew's response :I enjoyed teaching the student greatly, He was quick to pick up points made about the poems we considered, and showed considerable literary appreciation. Given a wider reach of terms to deploy, and a sharpened sense of how the sense of a poem relates to its form, I am sure the highest grade will be in his grasp. I have not seen any written work yet, of course, but would be pleased to and to ensure that he does reach his potential. :)
Perfect! Very good. I felt motivated, intrigued and eager to learn and discuss more on the varied topics of discussion.
- Drew's response :Erin is a highly intelligent and insightful student whose writing demonstrates personal engagement and a grasp of subtle psychological and literary undercurrents. She will do even better as she increases the skill with which she relates close reading of textual detail to the author’s overall design and a sense of the relevant historical and literary context.
Perfect! From D to A*
Andrew coached my son for about a year. My son had very little understanding, interest and appreciation for literature when he started. Gradually he developed a strong interest in discussing with us, the main themes of each book he read with Andrew. He was able to appreciate what was happening in history at that time / setting of the stories. The maturity in reading is what delights us as parents over the A*. But of course the A* gives my son the confidence to further push boundaries’
Andrew does not push or drill (which I was pushing for when we began), he met my son where he was and stretched his thinking. Also gave him skills n directions to tackle the exam questions.
Heartfelt thanks to Andrew for guiding my son through an incredible growth journey.
Subject : English Literature
Outcome : A*Perfect! A one-of-a-kind tutor
First of all, Andrew is an extremely flexible and punctual tutor. He knows how to accommodate his students by presenting lessons in the most optimal way.
Andrew's efforts with my son have made him achieve his fullest potential in the A-level subject of Eng. literature, which is something none of his teachers were really successful in doing before. Andrew is an observant and insightful teacher; he is well-equipped to judge and motivate my son's academic progress.
Andrew follows what goes on in school as well. He can thus understand just what is being demanded from his student's areas that need improvement. He is very involved with my son outside their tutoring sessions. He regularly sends emails about books or critical articles that are meant to help my son in his academic journey. He is resultingly very inspiring as a tutor and a great motivator for the subject.
Andrew has a tremendous bank of knowledge about the field of literature. He does not shy away from criticising his student's work, and his feedback is always intuitive, eye-opening, and useful. He and my son are certainly in it together as far as my son's academic journey is concerned.
My son feels lucky to have him as a tutor, and for that I thank him.
Subject : English Literature
Outcome : My son applied to Oxford at Andrew's suggestion, obtained A* in his A level, and has been accepted!Perfect! An expert
Andrew is an expert of Eng Lit / Eng Lang . He can always delivers his knowledges to the student clearly. My son attended over a year of his Eng lessons, can get to understand much more about the subjects deeply. Andrew also teaches Eng patiently with positive attitude which I appreciate a lot. Thank you Andrew!

Drew has consistently provided me with perceptive and nuanced analysis during lesson time, as well as a great deal of supplementary resources outside of our sessions.

I booked tuitions with Andrew for my son because his school provided little stimulus and contact during the COVID-19 lockdown. Andrew seems to have a real ability to inspire and engage as already my son is reading more, with more vigour and enthusiasm and enjoys every session. I am super grateful.

Drew has been the most amazing tutor! I have gained so much confidence in English over the past few months and it would never have been possible without him.
Andrew helped my daughter with her A-level retake. She had been demoralised by a fairly disastrous nosedive performance the first time around, but Andrew believed in her and saw her potential He could see exactly where her weaknesses were and addressed them head on, she says that he provided consistently inspiring and motivating lessons.
Andrew helped her to improve by FOUR grades. She is off to a great uni now and full of confidence.
A big thank you.Andrew tutored both my children for several years both English Literature and English Language.
He tutored my son through GCSEs and my daughter through GCSEs and A-levels.
Without Andrew my son definitely would not have achieved those grades, we were dumfounded as presumably were his teachers as he was predicted Ds. Andrew tutored my daughter through the large jump from GCSE to A level, outshining her predicted grades.
He is very dedicated to those he teaches, he fully invests himself in their learning and goes above and beyond his lesson hours.
I recommend him without reservation to you.Andrew supported me during my English A level re-take of coursework and exams, he was a knowledgeable tutor capable of inspiring and challenging me with a very prompt reply time at all hours.
Thank you!Andrew has made me feel more confident in my writing and communication skills since he has always been encouraging me to perform better than I usually do. He has helped to excel my knowledge, not only about English Literature, but also about society itself. Andrew has always pushed for me to do better by marking my essays with constructive criticisms which had helped me to write more sophisticatedly. I never really had an interest in poetry, especially war poems, however, I have become more intrigued by the history of poetry, particularly Romanticism since Andrew has passed on his incredible knowledge to me.
He is a dedicated, friendly and intelligent individual who can help any student to boost their grades incredibly.
Not only has he been my helping hand academically, he has also helped to improve my personal statement which resulted in me being accepted to a great university!I have no hesitation in recommending Andrew. He tutored my son in A Level English Literature for a few months before the exam, in hindsight I would have started the tutoring much earlier in the process. My son wanted to study English for his degree and needed to achieve a high grade. At the time my son was feeling under pressure, didn't feel confident in his abilities and wasn't completely focused on what he needed to do in the time he had left before the exam. Andrew has a huge enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of his subject, he helped my son immensely. My son found him inspirational, he became focused and organised his study time and reading much more effectively. Andrew also made many useful wider reading suggestions for the books chosen for his exam.
Drew is attentive, asks perceptive questions of the text under consideration, is happy to debate/discuss topics in depth. He is very punctual & flexible and clearly intelligent. A super tutor.
He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He shows a genuine interest in his student and his subject. He is completely up-to-date with the requirements for current exams.
Andrew managed to engage my son's interest in English language and literature, showed him how to dig into a text and motivated him to work.
We all were very happy with Andrew's work and my son's achievement.Andrew provided English Language and Literature tuition for my son over the past year and half. We were fortunate to be introduced to him through the Agency further to my son becoming dissatisfied with his previous tutor.
My son and I found Andrew to be extremely professional, which enabled us to form a positive working relationship with him very quickly. Andrew’s approach enabled him to ascertain weaknesses in my son’s approach quickly and to discuss targets and structures to deliver the required improvements.
Andrew provides lots of positive energy and enthusiasm which was important in driving forward with our targets for improvement. He is personable, articulate and has strong interpersonal skills.Andrew has truly inspired my son. He has transformed from being apathetic towards learning English, to being fully engaged and really loving the subject.
The result speaks for itself.View more recommendations
